What do you listen to while you read?
I've separated lots of tracks from The Witcher 3 into playlists which I switch between: Calm, battle, mystery etc. when reading fantasy

When reading anything else I just listen to any generic classical music

The ones who can listen to music (even "calm" or "ambient") while reading are the true brainlets.

If I imagine music I've logged into my memory when i'm reading and "play" the songs when I deem the moment cool enough, does that count?

>> No.11520426

The concept isn't interesting to me. You associate music that has nothing to do with what you're reading to the scenery happening in your mind. Your focus is also not 100% on the book, by that I don't mean that you're not able to focus while listening to music but that necessarily a part of your focus is on the music, otherwise it would be useless to put it on. Silence is superior.

Depends what kind of music. If it is music with a set rhythm and following an obvious musical scale/pattern (the kind of music that draws your attention, that can be danced to or whistled) - I agree.
But ambient music that soothes the mind and can be listened to without actively being listened to - can enhance reading.

Tim Hecker, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, William Basinski or Max Richter usually. Sometimes Chad Lawson.
Unless I am at work (where i do a good bit of reading) in which case I would be listening to massive automated industrial machinery; pneumatic cylinders exhausting, servo-motors roaring or whirring, chains clacking in a great rational cacophony.

I listen to period music when reading. So ancient greek music while reading Aristotle, Classical music while reading Hegel, and 6ix9ine while reading Foucalt.

Usually nothing musical. If I must I turn on a box fan or turn up my AC just for the droning noise. I find that it helps "stabilize" my thoughts. I tried playing rain effects but it just made me sleepy. Which is weird because actual rain gives me a greater desire to work.
