I read the first one a few years ago and at the time I decided I wouldn't continue the series, but then I reckoned I'd give it a go. I think I was having a kick for hard science and wanted to see how the biological part of terraforming would unfold. I'd forgotten about the race-mixing Hiroko was doing and how much endless arguing goes on between the factions, as well as the constant talk about fucking regolith.

I was definitely dumb for assuming it would have more of an action focus, when it's actually all happening in the background.

Off the top of my head, all I can recommend is Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton. not him but I second this anon's maymay. 200 pages of whining. I was screaming "Just fucking seppuku yourself already Jap" at the book by the end.

Look up Kokoro by Natsume Soseki. It was written in pre-war Japan, which im convinced was the only time they weren't all fucked in the head.

not to mention figures of wealth, political or religious status dante wants to put at certain levels of hell too. imagine if the author of ready player one wanted to lambast george bush or bill gates by featuring them in an unflattering scene. i havent read the book so im not sure if the author did something like this.

I liked it ok. When written the setting was contemporaneous and a hundred years of changes makes it interesting. However it is the story of a young girl growing up with a dictionary stuck in her throat. So I read it before bed, because I liked it well enough, but not enough to keep me up for hours when I really should be sleeping.
