/lit/,
I am certain I want to do PhD work in English, but what should I specialize in? I have taken survey courses in American and English and most of my electives have been on criticism or the Novel.

I like learning languages (German, Greek) should I just do Classics or study Anglo-Saxon and Medieval English Literature?

Anglo-Saxon, a dead language in which no great literature was written, and which had little discernible influence on later writing.

Latin & Greek, dead languages which have a bunch of masterpieces each, and which influenced all writing from the Renaissance through James Joyce and beyond.

Do the math.

I'm OK with this. I'd rather study something I care about and still be a peon the rest of my life than major in math and make 300k a year or whatever.

I am heavily considering Classics but I want to be able to research and teach the Novel and Modernism and Shakespeare, which I wouldn't be able to do if I study Greek and Latin for five more years.

If you take a summer immersion course, you can be proficient in BOTH Latin and Greek within 2 years. Trust me, they're not hard languages to learn, particularly because you're not learning to speak them.

http://web.gc.cuny.edu/lginst/

That's the most famous summer class in the USA. Not sure where you're located, but that gets a huge international crowd of scholars / undergrads every year....

I actually enjoy Greek (I learned Koine because I am at a private university) and am taking my first readings course now in it, but I haven't taken Latin yet (but I probably will next year). Can I get into a Classics program with a year of basic Latin?

Right so, as a mathematician, show your workings - what leads you to believe this?
