Alright time to review the last few sci fi books I read.

Ian M Banks

Player of games - pretty boring. Fag plays games with barbarian empire "ho ho, get it the barbarian empire represents old humanity"
Use of weapons - pretty good, awesome ending.

John scalzi

Old mans war - comfy tier, rip off of Forever war imo.
The ghost brigades - space pewpew, easy fun read, dumb special forces space orgies.

To be honest as a active duty Ranger who loves deploying I couldn’t make it through Forever War. It just reeked too much of Vietnam for me to connect with in any meaningful way. I dropped it after their first engagement.

As far as these kinds of books go, I’d say Starship Troopers actually reflects guys who want to get out and fight, Old Man’s War reflects your average joe just in it for college tuition, and Forever War is a reflection guys drafted into Vietnam. Not sure how to define Armor, but I’d put it well above Old Man’s War and Forever War.

It's amazing that you have this attitude because I feel the same way as someone who deployed a fuckload back when there was a war on for the regular guys.

Starship Troopers is about a volunteer who finds military life suits him. Forever War is about a conscript who hates it. That's not a coincidence.

Armor is basically a Hollywood combination of the two: a man flees his past and does a bunch of cool action scenes interspersed with asides on the horrors of war. Now watch this! etc.

A common complaint about Sanderson's writing is that the prose is poor. Even those fans who usually can't admit a single other problem with his writing, will often say his prose is poor. I disagree.

IMO, his early work definitely has poor prose. Elantris, Mistborn, Warbreaker, these all suffer from poor prose and from from poor writing in general. I still love them, but I wouldn't recommend them to someone who isn't yet a Sanderson fan. They are just very far from his best work.

However, Sanderson seems to deliberately utilize Orwellian prose. Clear, straightforward prose that is incredibly easy to follow.

This isn't bad prose at all, so long as you're doing it well. However, it's pretty much the on the extreme opposite end from purple prose on a spectrum. You don't read a novel for it's beautiful Orwellian prose ... it's not beautiful. It's not ugly either, though, and I absolutely disagree with anyone who says Sanderson's recent-ish prose is. What it is, is practical, allowing the reader to better follow a book focused much more on narrative and worldbuilding and "content", than artful presentation.

Post-TWoK I think Sanderson's prose feels VERY different. It's no longer clunky at all, it's just very well written Orwellian-ish prose. You don't notice it at all.

Of course, if someone is looking for beautiful prose in fantasy, Sanderson might be the last person to recommend. Sofia Samatar probably writes the most beautiful prose I've read in fantasy ... she's certainly a very different type of author.

But post-TWOK I think it's very inaccurate to call Sanderson's prose poor. There are still problems, like his repeated use of "stormlight puffing from his lips" etc., but outside of that I think his prose is great. It's just very practical, maybe even minimalist. It's not supposed to enchant.

if way of kings was just kaladin and dalinar (he's also awful at naming things, my god) i could see way of kings being a pretty good little fantasy story. but instead he chose to bloat the book with unnecessary garbage like countless interludes with characters no one cares about, world development that beats you over the head, flashbacks that would have happened in a chapter in any other book, and retarded 14 year old smart ass jokes from shallan.
theres nothing orwellian about it.

I wanted to share my overwhelming appreciation of Brandon Sanderson. I'm currently reading 'The Way of Kings' and am struck by how complex the characterisation is, how thorough the worldbuilding is, and how creative and natural his writing style is. I'd visited his site earlier where he has the bar charts showing his progress with his books and assumed he was a taste of the future- machines generating stories for us based on calculation and formulae. Could I have been more wrong?

I tried out the first book of the Mistborn series and was absorbed by Kelsier. Some of the fight scenes in that book were so imaginative and vividly described. And now I've finally got my bands on 'The Way of Kings' (previously I was mistakenly delivered two copies of part 2 so I delayed seeking out the first part as life is busy). Again, the characters as so fascinating, relatable, and complex. His writing is still original and demonstrating effortless creativity. And there's a certain comfort to knowing that you're enjoying the writing of a prolific writer who is good at what they do- there's more to seek and enjoy.

How does he do it? It's like he's cut out the whole 'oh, give me time as I live and seek inspiration for the next page' and has managed to observe and absorb so much about life, personality, writing and so much more and has managed to wrestle it into some kind of order so that he can draw on things at will as he churns out these fresh, satiating books that are so well balanced and... whole (in a wholesomely whole kind of way). It's awe inspiring. Putting pen to paper seems hard enough, but doing is so masterfully... I wouldnt't be surprised if someone told me that he's actually several centuries old, having devoted the last few to the study of story and writing.

What a gem. I'm writing this because Fantasy used to play a large role in helping me cope with loneliness and depression when I was younger and, over time, the repetitiveness of it and the new grimdark stuff just couldn't do it. I've finally found something that, once again, is giving me a bit of passion and comfort. Thank you so much, Mr Sanderson.

Just for you information. Most of the first book is just gritty hunger-games. It's a really strong interpretation of battle-royale, but something to keep in mind. There's still a bunch of really fun stuff in it though, but the series really gets big by the second and third books. Even though the third was underwhelming i'd still say it had the craziest shit in it.
There's also some very clear Warhammer 40K influence.

Well for the most part what you've listed are pop-fiction potboilers (ASoIaF, Kingkiller) and author pet projects (/tg/ would call them "fantasy heartbreakers", basically Stormlight and Martzipan). They perhaps coast on one main salient point (eg, Kingkiller gets recced because people who read Dan Brown novels think it's good prose, Black Company is one of the original grimderps, ASoIaF is accessible and has tons of tweeests) but don't really do anything new or exciting/interesting to tug the heartstrings of the people who actually care about awards.

Additionally many long-running series are less likely to get nominations because "I'm not reading 8 books just to see if this one is good!" or because the author flames out near the end (there's a notable decline in quality in the Black Company after they get to Fantasy Africa/India and eventually it feels like Cook is just milking it for more money), and a lot of the time they might miss the Zietgiest of what is popular. Eg, aside from it's writing style, Black Company arrived in a period where high/epic fantasy was still the top dog.

Incorrect, he was ALWAYS lazy. Look at him, you don't get and stay that fat if you're a motivated person. He was always about writing for TV full time anyhow, and now he finally got his wish. Consider the series as good as over with because even if he did take time off from sucking HBO's dick he'd be dead long before he finished anything.

It's not about writing, it's about editing and quality control. I can write the first draft of a novel in as little as a month, usually more like 2/2.5 average. Then it needs to be reread, mentally processed, then rewritten twice, then edited and probably rewritten again and edited again, then sent out to beta readers and then to my actual editor/agent. This is how the process works for those who care about their writing beyond the naked plot.

Web writers are writing for those who care only about the story and its progression and their prose and flow both suffer immensely.

realistically speaking theres nothing stopping authors from releasing a book every month. many authors, even if they are mostly indie, release a full size novel about once a month while still having enough free time for family and friends.
i think its all about motivation and work ethic. many big authors are also held back by their publishers. there was a thing a few years back where some bigshot came clean about having written many actual books in a time frame where he hasnt actually released anything because his publisher wanted to pad out sales of one book through marketing and hype.

I was in from /lit/ before and it was really bad. I tried my best to stay with it, but the elitist circlejerk steadily grew unbearable. I wouldn't place a quality barrier for entry, but I would have some sort of test, maybe just that they can post a chapter of something they've written, even if its shit, to prove they will create and contribute content. The more you try to cater to "serious writers", with users from /lit/ or places like it, you're going to get tons of people that refuse to read anything except "literature" tier stories, then everyone will stop writing/submitting them because there is that general feeling of disdain being fostered, then it will die as people realize its pointless and leave.

The Sparrow is a first contact story with very heavy handed religious themes, but there isn't any tension. I think most religious people would just conclude that god made the aliens in addition to humans and try to convert them.

Writers of the Future, before it turned to shit, used to feature some really good stories about religion. There was one about Muslims migrating to another planet that had alien life on it. I'll look for the title if you care.

The "average" fantasy author puts out an average of 1 book a year. GRRM and Rothfuss aren't average. They're celebrity authors. GRRM at least had to write a ton of shit before he reached that status thanks to HBO's adaptation of his biggest work taking off the way it did. By comparison I have no idea why Rothfuss is such a big name. He's written 2/3 of a trilogy and while it was hot shit at the time I don't know how it has sustained more than 10 years of celebrity status. It feels like Rothfuss has spent more time as a socialite than a writer to the point that you can't even call him a novelist anymore. He's a professional celebrity. His job is going to cons and signings. GRRM at least spent decades working as a writer in television and fiction so he's still more writer than celebrity even at this point.

Yeah, and it equally boggles my mind that people can write with an outline. When I outline, it becomes static and boring; a task I'm fulfilling. Whereas writing by the seat of my pants, I experience the whole story live and get to see the twists and turns as they happen, almost as a third party. Then I finish it and realize that what I felt is not what I wrote, and that's when I rewrite it two or three times until it feels exactly as I felt. I'm envious of those who outline, because I imagine the rewrite process is not as total and intensive.

Not so much for guys, most you get is some name calling, general insults, questioning your sexuality, fights here and there, etc.

Girls, though, they go out of their way to make each other want to commit suicide. and they'll feel 100% justified in doing what they're doing even if they actually know its fucked up and wrong. I've personally overheard an 11 year old girl tell another 11 year old girl that no one will ever love her because she's ugly and that she should just give up and hang herself right now, and with such fucking conviction that I was sickened. I know I'm on 4chan, but these were goddamned kids.

Of course you might not see any of that. Ultimately it depends on the specific school and the quality of the people who's kids attend. A school system that cares more about its image and protecting its own ass than the children in their charge and their emotional and physical well being is gonna be chock fucking full of bullying shits. Parents who don't understand that its their fucking job to teach their kids to be human beings are another major factor. You get that shit all over, though, not just here in Burger Nation.
