>Latin
1) Get Lingua Latina per se illustrata. It teaches Latin with zero English (or any language other than Latin) involved. You start slow and build upwards. It uses pictures to describe words as necessary.

2) Get Wheelock's Latin.

3) Begin the Dowling method
>Memorize all 5 declensions
>Memorize all 4.5 conjugations
>Memorize them, faggot

4) Go through Wheelock's and Lingua Latina per se illustrata. Use Wheelock's as a guide to grammar as you go. Wheelock's gets you into reading Latin to translate it, Lingua Latina per se illustrata will get you into reading Latin to read Latin. Being able to do both is important.

Any charts/recs for more beginner tier fiction? I've just started reading fiction, almost done with A Clockwork Orange and I really like it. Looking for stuff that's maybe dealing with more brutal subject matter and maybe a bit philosophical.

There isn't even any any continuity between the plays that take place during the Trojan War and the epics. You're missing too much context to link the works. Just read the epics and Summary of the Epic Cycle first then keep the plays until the complete works for the respective authors. Otherwise, pretty good.

For starters I would recommend the vajracchedika prajnaparamita sutra: a general explanation if you are interested in zen, Oxford Classics Dhammappada or the Khaggavisana sutta if you are into Theravada. If you are interested in esoteric buddhism, there is little translated and most of the doctrines are passed on verbal to initiated monks. Shingon Vajrayana buddhism is probably the most accessible, so you should find a Mahavairocana tantra.

The Virgin Puthujjana Mahayanist:

>avid subscriber of Tricycle
>retweets the Dalai Lama on twitter
>disrespects arahants
>thinks he can be enlightened and still be subject to birth in samsara
>worships weird made up deities
>puts off his self development to help others (foolish)
>thinks that all beings have 'buddha-nature'
>has false view and will never attain nirvana

The Virgin Puthujjana Theravadin:

>"just follow the breath"
>doesn't know that breath is a metaphor for the atman (literally "breath" in sanskrit)
>the buddha taught we have no permanent soul
>thinks that enlightenment can exist without a self that is englightened
>thinks the Theravada school is the oldest
>attends retreats
>thinks that 'middle-path' refers to moderating eating and sleeping
>thinks only monks can attain final gnosis
>has false view and will never attain nibbana

The Chad Ariyasavaka:

>knows that the Atman exists and is the only refuge
>knows that attaining nirvana is equal to becoming Brahman
>knows that neo-platonic thought was a revival of original Buddhism
>knows that the 'middle path' refers to the strip of light down the middle of the night sky of the milky way galaxy as a metaphor for the path that leads to Brahman (the absolute)
>knows that the Buddha was a Rishi and rediscovered the ancient path that the ancient Vedic sages found long ago
>has right view and will eventually attain final gnosis

It's a niche interest for sure and not for everyone. But if you are the kind of person who is interested in germanic myth and medieval christianity, enjoys Tolkien, is curious about english etymology, etc, it's incredibly fulfilling and fun to study.

The poetic corpus is not huge, I think it's something like 12,000 to 15,000 lines max (Beowulf is about 3000). But a lot of it is really interesting material. Besides the germanic/heroic violence material (Beowulf, Battle of Maldon, etc) I really enjoy the shorter elegies like The Wanderer, The Seafarer, The Ruin, The Wife's Lament, etc. Added to that there are religious and allegorical poems like Caedmon's Hymn, the Advent Lyrics, the Dream of the Rood, and the Phoenix. There are also many poems like Andreas, Judith and Elene about various parts of biblical or christian history, often based on latin analogues. Finally there are many interesting riddles from the Exeter book, some of which are still unsolved. I haven't read many of these but plan to get to them someday. There are other less known poems too.

As for the prose you've got the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, various saints' lives, translations of Boethius, also various sermons (the Sermo Lupi ad Anglos aka the sermon of the Wolf to the English - the bishop in question was named Wulfstan). All of these are really interesting for studying medieval history, rhetoric, etc.

If you don't have time or interest in learning the language, you can still read the literature in translation, just grab an anthology (the Broadview one is good) and see what stuff appeals to you.

You're very welcome and I hope you end up finding some good reading material anon! I also recommend the Cambridge Old English Reader which has a grammar reference at the start and then lots of sample material with really heavy annotations and glosses so that once you have the basic grammar down you can go ahead and read without frequent trips to a dictionary or appendix. The OE Beowulf is brisk and free even compared to the most accurate translation - a skewed comparison since obviously liberties to be taken to preserve precision of meaning. Still, it makes me want to learn Old English.
>Leoht eastan com
compared to
>Light shone from the east
>Light came from the east
It's vivid and even sparsely elegant. I really like it.

Thanks for looking closely at that passage anon, I chose it because it's a favorite of mine. Terseness is an edge that inflected languages (like OE and German) have over ones (like our own) that depend more on word order and therefore have to insert more prepositions and particles. When you read the lines in the original they seem very sharp compared to any translation. The flipside for OE is that we don't fully understand their idioms (we don't have enough to tell) and what to them was clarity can be cloudy to us today.

To readers with a certain mind, that mix between basic English words and Germanic 4-case grammar is a source of beauty you can't get any other way.
