Does anyone else really hate bad language and crude humor? This stuff is really prevalent in post-modern fiction. I can't stand the disgusting scatological obsession of Thomas Pynchon and William Gass. For example this quote from Omensetter's Luck: "The body of Our Saviour shat but Our Saviour shat not."

I am laughing at your pathetic thoughts. Surely Gass truly found himself during the 80s, but dismissing his writing for his aspirations of finding the primitive man inside of his machismo male characters based upon his own upbringing in Ohio is to completely miss the point of his aesthetics. And if you brainlets can't recognize the pure filth of Kohler's thoughts then you are living inside of your own solipsistic worldview, and you should probably check if you're on the spectrum.

I was just thinking something similar. A lot of postmodern literature is obsessed with humor. That's not to say that we shouldn't laugh while we read. Pynchon and Derrida have some genuinely funny moments if you are sort of "in on the joke" while you are reading, but I haven't read a postmodern author really embody a higher complexity of writing beside Endo. I don't understand why everyone just went "I AM GOING TO BE FUNNY NOW!" And stopped there.

I find it quite soothing. Some of the post-war writers pack so much information in their sentences, and jokes help me break up the content and be able to view it from another perspective. I can't think of anyone embracing complete seriousness.

Absolutely. This aspect of postmodernism and the boomer ethos is best understood as the judaification of western culture. As jews gained power and injected their nihilistic, perverted, and iconoclastic nature into it, the boomers absorbed this mentality and perpetuated it through art, and they were rewarded by jewish cultural elites in publishing, praise, etc. for it.

You're mistaking a true worldliness for crude humor. Joyce, Pynchon, Gass, Rabelais, Montaigne, etc, are all people who have surpassed your petit-bourgeoisie propriety in their search for understanding and their spiritual embrace or penetration of life. That "fuck you full of farts" letter gets joked about here, but that's a level of love most people on /lit/ can't even comprehend, the kind that will persist into the horrors of old age because it already finds the erotic in the disgusting and pedestrian. You have to actually confront the disgusting, horrific facts of the world if you want to be great, and they do, often with humor and panache. It's not just majestic, Miltonic evil that makes for great literature. You're a fucking pleb, truly, no meme, for real.

Breasts aren't nudity you fucking prude.

Also I'm not saying your kind of art is bad I'm saying you're an intellectual and ultimately spiritual pauper for rejecting the worldly art. The positive qualities of your art aren't in contradiction to what I'm saying. Of course there is unworldly good art. But you have to live in the world, so a ton of the great works are worldly. It becomes more and more imperative to be worldly, too, living in the worldly times we live in. Read some fucking Pound. You have to make it new.

>>11460630
Confusing class circumstance with class mindset is dumb. Gass has is generally speaking pretty exceptional. The density of his writing does presume what would generally be a bourgeois reader but that's fine. Class politics don't really apply that deeply to art. It's a contemporary intellectual perversion to conduct everything according to economic principles.

the same losers who think they are past prudish bourgeois conceits (I'm cringing at your determination to separate yourself from a social class that has been destroyed through the tools of industry and culture) would shirk when pointing out controversial ideas such as the ownership of major media corporations by Jews. What you mistake for your own "maturity" or "realistic" worldview is simply a boomerism to break the social norms set by your parents or grandparents (if you are a thirty year old boomer). Not realizing that saying "fuck" or Gass talking about a penis is nothing but puerile shit. Unless there is a purpose beyond jejune obsession with breaking whatever rules don't exist anymore. Reality is far worse than you faggots are willing to confront, I would love to see your horror confronting novel on the hormone-induced sterility of sexually confused youths, but of course this would require confrontation of actual horrors.

You realize your own principle here can be used to argue Gass is good because he represents a specific social setting, the university, right?

But you're probably going to reply that certain social settings are (((decadent))) rather than sticking by an actual artistic generative principle.

Btw I would actually like to read your novel about modern sterility if it was well read.
