literally this, but I really don't see a problem. undergraduate degrees are glorified survey programs, you aren't supposed to do much more than lean the history of philosophy and the most influential ideas in it. Then you go on to grad school and study X school in depth, then you go on to a PHD where you study one specific topic/philosopher. Unless you are a philologist or a historian of philosophy like pic related (or an autist like me), you don't need to read everything cover to cover.

I majored in philosophy. It actually attracted a lot of guys I would have assumed to be STEMtards, and it was fairly not-shit in that regard. Of course it doesn't lead to great wealth as a matter of course, but who gives a shit about raking in $100k a year once you've gained an appreciation for philosophy and also become aware of the time necessary to reading it? N-not me h-haha

I used to get really butthurt about people constantly ripping on philosophy. I later realized that the main cause for this is that people have OD'd on capitalism to the point where anything that isn't specifically contributing toward some sort of financial success (which under capitalism is literally the only relevant form of success) is a pointless endeavor. I hate it when people even attempt to defend philosophy on these terms ("You can go to law school!"). It is cool precisely because of its absolute rejection of these values. Philosophy in particular seems to trigger people for some reason and you should simply find humor in this and exploit it to your advantage. You should shame your accuser for not being able to intuitively recognize the value of philosophy. I am several years out of college and have a well paying big boy job, so the usual "philosophy major" jokes have no affect on me and I basically make anyone who attacks philosophy feel insecure and stupid and I end up triggering them rather than the other way around. Feels amazing after years of hearing the same two or three shitty jokes about working at Starbucks from brainless idiots.

If you take at least a few logic courses you can easily work in software development.

I'm a philosophy major and I'll be starting my third year soon. While I genuinely don't regret my choice, on the contrary, I wouldn't recommend anyone to become a philosophy major, either. For my plans and the path I've chosen majoring in philosophy is an excellent choice; I will teach philosophy, psychology and religion in high school after I've graduated. As a side note, being a high school teacher might seem like a very mediocre and ambitionless goal to some of you, but unlike in (presumably) many countries, in my country it's actually a pretty respected and desirable profession. Philosophy fits my personality and my way of looking at the world, and it offers me tools I'll be needing in the future, most importantly for my writing and metapolitical endeavors. I was meant to study philosophy, as cringeworthy as that might sound.

However, it seems that many of my peers have no clear plan about what their doing with their life. Many have quit their studies, or are not progressing at all. Why do taxpayers have to pay, so that a thirty-year-old alcoholic can study, or "study" philosophy and literature, or better yet, philosophy and gender studies? I see quite little worth in what is going on in the department: unless the students are finding "real" jobs, such as teaching, what is the point for the whole pseudo intellectual afternoon club? Why do regular people have finance the research of a bunch of Marxist professors, whose most important job seems to brainwashing their students to think like them? From my point of view, they are doing more bad than good to society.

The whole department is a huge leftist, liberal circle jerk; compared to them, I'm literally Hitler. The students and professors alike are incredibly narrow minded, all the while claiming to represent the enlightened intelligentsia. They scorn the people who are paying for their salary and studies, because they are a bunch on uneducated peasants, who haven't even read postmodern French philosophy and can thus never understand anything about the world. They see themselves as individual thinkers, although many of them are the very definition of herd mentality. There are some exceptions, but very, very few.

I specifically chose to not pursue philosophy in undergrad because I had no reason to believe that I would be able to contribute to it. Now, after spending years developing skills in other areas, I have every reason to believe I can make serious advances in philosophy that it's unlikely anyone else will.
