Am currently reading the second book in the "Expanse" series (Caliban'sWar) by James Corey. Low calorie easy to read and easy to forget space opera, with a somewhat supernatural horror/alien twist and lots of political and personal intrigues. if you like that Pandora's Star by James F Hamilton is a bit better IMHO.

It's honestly not trashy at all. It can be slightly cheesy, and repetitive, because each book is Indigo going after one of the demons, and the story structures are the same.
>enter new region
>accidental meeting with man
>man falls in love
>indigo slowly falls in love
>but on eternal quest, cant settle down
>kills demon and leaves for the next region
but the regions are vivid and pretty unique, and the writing is surprisingly good, especially for the era it was released in.

The first four covers are stylistic and nice, then the 80s hits like a truck and suddenly face and tits.

A boypussy is a colloquial phrase for a male anus. A feminine penis is a joke phrase for a small penis, or the smooth, sometimes unusable penis some hermaphrodites have.

This book had a great and intriguing premise. A male warrior gets trapped in a female body through the guile of an evil mage who's been doing it for centuries. If the author could pull off the male to female transformation and show struggle and change, in which the main character grows and learns as a result, this would be a series worth reading.

Unfortunately, that's not exactly what happens.

The author relies entirely on the male gender and gratuitous sexual violence to show the struggle of the main character. I found it appalling and had to put down the book.

If I wanted that out of my fantasy adventure novels I would go to the corner store and buy those magazines wrapped in brown paper bags.

Stay away from this series unless you want to read soft-core porn.

And please don't defended anything superhero related. Especially comics, which set the bar for bad writing. There's not really any strong difference between the typical bland SF monarchy and e.g. Clarke's technocratic ruling councils.

There are science fiction writers that engage with the benefits of monarchy or feudalism in a more or less serious way, like Poul Anderson's The High Crusade or Dune. But they're the exception.

I'm pretty tired of it. I used to contribute quite a bit, but I honestly don't think I've been here in a month. I don't have an opinion on fantasy and it makes up the bulk of the thread. A /sf/ general again would be more to my taste, but there's just nothing here for me. I'm getting more enjoyment out of reddit sci-fi communities. They at least make good recs and link to resources.

Don't get me wrong, the commenters at reddit are still naive, hopeless, dickless + an ethnic pejorative of your choosing, but I like that it gives me rabbit holes to go down and .epub/.pdf resources. Their opinions are the fucking worst, though, and they can't understand the slightest subtle sarcasm. As long as I can rape them for resources I'll keep my accounts.

But yeah, where's the harm in trying a break-up again? The worst that would happen is the thread would take a week or two to reach bump limit (I have no doubt the /fant/ thread would still only last two days).

Anyway, you goys read anything worth a shit lately? I didn't mind pic related despite it being packed with le current year shit. I'll pick up the sequel in September.

Honestly any place where you can't call people faggots on account of their taste really isn't worth the effort. I have far more luck with forums that focus on sci-fi.
As for what I read lately I would recommend Wool (or Silo) series by Hugh Howley.
It's an interesting spin on post-apocalyptic societies confined to underground habitats.

Yeah, you can't interact with those people on any level. I'm still pensive about forums just because they all degrade into a meta discussion about members. Too much hero-worship and groupthink.

I'm generally a fan of William Gibson. I think Bruce Sterling has some great short stories and non-fic. I bought a first American edition of The Difference Engine and I was very disappointed. This is the popular opinion about it.

I haven't read a lot in the subgenre but I really liked The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson which is primarily future-Victorian.

I am sorry anon, I completely forgot about answering you.

>One of the reviews describes it as a mix between Lovecraft and Dilbert.
That's not exactly true. There is this humorous thread about the insanity of working for a government agency dealing with insanity causing entities but it's a small part of the book.
Honestly I loved the first book in the Laundry series. The thing is that the book is very Lovecraftian but from a modern, military-industrial complex kind of view. We are not talking about a bunch of half-mad academics trying to stop the end of the world. We are talking about government agencies spending billions trying to weaponize pretty much every horror Lovercraft came up. In that regard, the novel is unique. It has a lot of sci-fi, a lot of Lovecraft, nazi occult groups, government employed necromancers, etc.
You could try A Colder War for size. It's a novelette, written by Stross, in which both sides of the Cold War start trying to weaponize cosmic horrors.
You can read it here - http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/stories/colderwar.htm..

I'll leave you with this little snippet:
"Your family could still be alive, you know.''

He looks up. "They could?'' Andrea? Jason? "Alive?''

The void laughs again, unfriendly: "There is life eternal within the eater of souls. Nobody is ever forgotten or allowed to rest in peace. They populate the simulation spaces of its mind, exploring all the possible alternative endings to their life. There is a fate worse than death, you know.''"

In Authority (Van der Meer), when Control is allowed to view the tape, what exactly is he seeing? I had trouble with the description. It sounded as though they started gibberish talking without being aware, then it's implied the person filming began flying, like maybe a bird-creature, right?

I told ya, it was a shitty topic about a shitty book.

Anyone read the Blackstar novel by Klayton/Celldweller/Josh Viola? The man made a concept album, wrote a novel to go along with the concept album, then wrote a "score" album for the novel. I remember liking a few of the songs on the concept album when it came out when I was a teenager, but I also had pretty bad taste back then. Might be interesting to revisit in the book, unless the writing is just awful.

So far I've added to my list:
Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding
Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher
Mortal Engines by Reeves, YA, also recommended by Anons here
Boneshaker by Cherie Priest
Lady of Devices by Shelley Adina, YA
