Post excerpts. I want to laugh

>> No.11408235

i remember skimming through it and it had chapters called shit like "What it means when it's raining" "What it means when a character is drinking tea"

I mean. At a certain point it isn't so much a sad gesture toward "how to read like a pro", but rather a howl out of the night about why this shithead society needs to start picking up books and putting down their Instagram. We will "unironically" get dumber before the 2nd wave of Renaissance. Protolanguage has already begun to deteriorate English. Call me a loon, say it's all just a process of change, tell me it isn't true. Only a matter of time before dialects start picking up internet slang. What have you people done? Jesus. What have we all done! Lol kek jk. Have you guys seen the new episode of game of thrones? That blonde broad had her tits out again!

I've unironically read it. It's not that bad, it's a good start for late high school-early college people who want to start thinking about meaning

>> No.11409943

Literally all it is is just one chapter after another of "this is what this means," and "this is a symbol of this." It's such a shallow way of reading. I can't believe the author read all those books and thinks this is what literature is about.

Most of that kind of analysis is what I do unconsciously. I can't believe that most people don't even consider this kind of aspects. I thought it was actually an easy introduction to literary criticism, but from what you're telling me, it seems like it's not.

That book by charles van doren mortimer adler. How to read a book is very good.

Theres reading and reading effectively with access to more information.

Kind of sounds like a book I looked at once that describes what stuff in your dreams were supposed to mean.

This actually isn't stupid at all. I can't focus on reading if I don't start by reading aloud. It's the best way to have my mind filled with the images of the words.

How does /lit/ read?

I just started that book I'm planning on finishing it before classes start back up. I plan to read the /lit/ trivium. My degree isn't in anything /lit/ related this is just for my own personal growth. Maybe it'll help me not sound like a retard if I ever have to write an incident report or the like.

stop being a dick. People have different areas of natural talent, and working on areas that you aren't naturally suited to requires looking like a retard. I imagine pro-swimmers would think that beginner swimmers technique is shit, but they may be doing it purely for fitness. Same thing with reading.

This book is only meant to be read during high school, which is what I did for AP lit. Anyone on here worth their weight in shit should already know everything this book discusses. Otherwise, this is a concise introduction into reading between the lines.

I'm part way through this and have finished How to Read a Book, and have completed an inspectional reading of The Trivium.

Can wholeheartedly recommend them both.

And when I said this I meant the autodidact core. Others aren't for me.

I'll likely read a Mind for Numbers, if anybody has anything to say about it.

I thought it was very good. Just make sure to take notes because it has both general ideas and various little tricks.
