The sad thing about free verse is that it can actually work, but it is alosmt impossible to find out WHY exactly. Many authors have written beautiful free verse poems, but it isn't immediately obvious what they're doing, whereas with traditional poetry, you could at least make a judgement at surface level very easily (melody, rhyme scheme, etc.)
