he was a megalomaniac obsessed with his legacy. he knew suicide would legitimize him as a tortured soul, the patron saint of sincerity, and elevate his ouvre. dfw's brilliance was pretending he hated the spotlight while deftly working to embrace it. he could have been pychon or mccarthy, but he desperately wanted to be validated by legions of adoring fans. see: this is water, every interview he ever did, the shoehorned avant-garde component of IJ, etc. it all reeks of desperation. still had literary talent, even if he never worked to refine it.

From what I read, he was making no progress on the pale king. He blamed the nardil (though in my opinion it was probably something else, like lack of exterior stimulation, or stagnation in his personal/familial development, but who is to say) so he went off of it and still wasn’t productive for 6 months, but got super depressed again and killed himself.

I think I remember franzen or someone say that he wanted to know what life was like unmedicated also.
