>Sophon
I think he might have been trying to make a point about the alien value system of the Trisolarans, but I don't think either their actions or, especially, the human characters' reactions to it make any sense on close examination. Maybe Sophon and the "negacivilizations" were supposed to be a parallel, but I don't think it was pulled off that well.

>it definitely should have been the main chick and her lover, who bought her a fricken star and a mother fricken universe, together at the end

This was definitely intentional. Liu wanted to show that "the universe" doesn't care about human concerns. Too bad he still copped out at the very end.

Curious - how so? I think audiobook readers will be out of a job soon. Speech-synthesizing GANs are getting better - GANs being a kind of neural network that are typically used to generate "human-like" date - and pretty soon TTS is going to be hard to distinguish from the real thing. Did the union get some law passed that outlaws commercial TTS programs? I kinda want to try making an open-source one.

I've been thinking about putting the next deadline at Aug 1st and allowing longer, 300-500 pages long book for the next choice. Thoughts?

tts prgramms arent really an issue if they are only used a certain way. for example reading short passages or translating text.
in 2015 there was a whole drama thing about some guy who wrote a voice ai that could talk in several languages, use inflections and put empheis on words. unions went up in arms about that because why would anyone pay voice actors decent money if they could just feed the lines to an ai and tweak some settings doing the exact same thing. and pay very little for that because its all automatic.

not gonna lie i thought wild wastes 2 wasnt that great. but 3 was a satisfying conclusion and i loved the tie ins with super sales and otherlife.
i just hope that this isnt the last time the characters appear. i know william only writes trilogies but i hope he wont just abandon previous characters and writes new trilogies with them. im also really curious to see how all this shared universe stuff ends up. i mean outside all the simmulations theres a bunch of threats and in ww3 its hinted at that someone is actually comming after runner somehow from within the simulation.
despite my initial dislike for pulp stuff ive grown seriously attached to williams stories i seriously want to know how this all plays out. its also great that he basically publishes a new book every three months. thats great work ethic.

>The Pavulians - a herd species of quadrupeds with two prehensile trunks instead of conventional limbs. Fairly religious and generally deferential to older authority, as befitting their evolutionary history as herd animals. An otherwise unremarkable species save for one incredibly dark secret. They send their citizens to Hell when they die. Okay, it's a virtual hell and what's sent is a mind-state captured at the point of death and then placed in a perfectly accurate simulation of what their people consider Hell to be (often hiring "creative" consultants). As the galactic community at large treats mind-states as being equivalent to the real person they were when they were alive, it's regarded as a despicably unnecessary act by most and as a needed social tool by it's advocates. It isn't helped by the fact that the general public don't know for certain if the hells actually exist, nor by the fact that hosting the data farms necessary to keep all the mind-states and separate hells running smoothly is a very lucrative trade. The Culture publicly disapproves of the Hells and is a covert participant in the entirely simulated wars to contest the issue.

That's because over time history has filtered out everything else. Cream rises to the top and all that. A while back I spent like 3 hours just going through the SFF section at my local main library and there were a lot of books that basically hadn't been checked out in at least 20 years. Tons of old "oh no overpopulation" and "oh no climate change" ones that are now hilariously dated. Of course this has also covered over good books.

Similarly look at anime. Ask somebody what three good animes from the 90s are and they'll probably list stuff like Slayers, NGE and Aa! Megami-sama. You probably won't get recommended Sabre Marionette J, Burn Up or Silent Moebius.

Others here, possibly including yourself, have said this. Then, when they get asked to make recommendations, they either go silent or indicate that they are literally incapable of telling good books from bad books and just funnel whatever word slurry they can find into their brainhole. by classic, I meant something that a person would have heard of even if they didn't read fantasy, something with a recurring narrative across most adaptations (even if it doesn't match the original version like Oz or Frankenstein), and over all is emulated by other writers in a way other than parody or reference

So not Xanth.

What are the legalities of writing a book that heavily implies it is apart of some established franchise universe but isn't really?

I want to write a story about a person who happens to exist in a galaxy where there are people who fight with bright neon colored laser swords, there was a big feud between these magical laser sword monks and the galactic government, and one of them became joined the galactic government and dawns a black helmet and wields a red laser sword. I will never use terminology like Jedis, The Force, or use established alien races of the canon and it would be entirely my own new cast of characters, but anybody reading it would think my story takes place in the Star Wars universe due to those kinda hints about things that happen behind the scenes.

Inspired by type things would be fine. I know things get weird if you ask rather than just doing it. It would be interesting to know how you actually get it approved to use a franchise name. But aside aside the ideas you mention are clearly inspired by however should be fine as you can't have a monopoly on space swords and magicians.

And given that the starwars universe is so vast in space as well as time it would make sense that there would be areas that have different governments and use different terminology. Starwars even addresses that this sort of thing exists it's self multiple times.

I don't think you guys understand how great a time it is to be reading books. With Amazon and goodreads it's much easier to get access to books these days.

Do you know why Name of the wind is popular? Because it was written in a time of shortage. There were so little new books being published that you took what you got, and hoped for hell they would continue.

When I read Green (10+ years ago ) it was a breath of fresh air compared to what was out at the time. It was something different. Now with Amazon selfpub you can read the new Wild Wastes, and find books similar with it. Back then you had to depend on readers opinions and hope that what they described matched your tastes.

Pic related is my documented reads from 5+ years ago lurking on lit before sffg. This shit hasn't been updated since. Read at least 300+ books since then.

>fantasy
Fiction with fantastical elements. Where fiction broadly means "events made up by the author", fantasy refers specifically to events which contravene the laws of reality, events that not only did not happen, but could never happen due to their fundamentally unreal qualities. It is for this reason that fantasies often take place in other worlds, since a core component in fantasy is different laws for reality (i.e. magic exists). Even if a fantasy is set "on earth" it is not earth as we know it, for it is full of unreal, fantastical things that could never exist in reality.
>epic fantasy
>high fantasy
These two are often used interchangeably to refer to large-scale fantasy stories set in constructed fictional worlds. Some people have differing connotations for them, like epic fantasy refers to your WoTs, your ASoIaFs, your Malazans, etc, while high fantasy can include stuff like A Wizard of Earthsea or The Hobbit, which while set in fictional worlds and having a large scale setting don't really go into the whole epic saga and are more tightly focused on just one guy's experience. But even so there's the components of an epic writ small, with a heroic journey undertaken and a vast world explored. Hence the two are often used to refer to the same type of stories.
>young adult fantasy
Fantasy written for teenagers, usually about teenagers. Common features are plots centering on rebelling against a tyrannical authority figure, love triangles/polygons, coming of age character arcs, and truckloads of adolescent angst.
