Looking for some good noir fiction, not necessarily detective though. Something modern would be nice and let's leave out Hammet, Chandler, or Daly.

There's a science fiction novel by K. W. Jeter simply called 'Noir'. In it, the detective protagonist has had is eyes specially treated to show the world with a film noir aesthetic, altering his perception of people and objects around him so they fit the style.

It follows the conventions of the genre, with an alienated, doomed, private detective hero, the femme fatale, all that jazz.

I'm yet to read it, but it's sitting on my bookshelf right goddamn now.

I'm terribly glad to hear that. I just finished Paul Auster's 'New York Trilogy' (mere minutes ago) and was wondering what to read next.
