Adam had additional unnamed children with Eve, and perhaps other women. It's clear that Adam, if taken as a literal person, would have procreated with some of his own children or great-great-grandchildren during his long lifetime.

But that's hardly relevant because Genesis isn't meant to be taken literally in 2018. Even the Church doesn't take it literally. How to understand this text is in fact part of the mystery of faith. Is the face that hovered over the waters true the serious metaphysical portion and the rest just a primitive tribe's creation myth? Plenty of non-denominational philistines are "Bible believing" and teach their brats the Earth is only 6000 years old, but they don't follow the laws on clothing or food and they don't stone people to death for sin either.

I've thought about this too. Adam could be the first hominid to be given consciousness by god and thus can be the first human. Or something like that. There is a lot of ancient history in genesis that isn t evident these days. The great flood could have happened as some geologist like pitman suggested the black sea was previously closed off and only flooded in the holocene. The flooding could have split humans into different parts of the sea and they spread out to other lands diverging in culture and language as they went. Consider how many indo European cultures have a cow diety in their culture, suggests a common source of orgin. But I don't know and I doubt we will ever know but it's fun to think about.

The NT is brilliant, but you have to remember it's a totally different work by a different set of authors. The OT is a Semitic creation myth, tribal chronicle, and book of law.
