I'm sorry, but a book like Hamlet, Ulysses, Don Quijote etc. isn't going to make a non-reader start reading. If anything they'll descourage them from reading. For someone who usually doesn't read books, you need a page turner, not some boring archaic classic that feels more like a school assignment rather than recreativity.

I'd recommend the Name of the Wind. After having read LotR and Game of Thrones I thought chapters were things you had to dedicate some willpower to read through.

Then I read Name of the Wind (and Wise Man's Fear and The Slow Regard of Silent Things) and of the 2000 pages, not a single one felt slow or dreary to me. There's only one character to follow, and there's always something going on. It's like it's on rails chugging forward on a coherent and exciting track instead of fucking up the pace and tempo by switching character or storyline mid-story. It manages this while simultaneously being very beautifully written with a poetic writing style, uet without coming off as pretentious.

When I was 18 I attempted to read Comfederacy of Dunces, I was overwhelmed with disgust and strong feelings of contempt for the characters and could not bear to read it.
I suppose this may have been due in part to my personal misfortune of having been acquainted with these types of people in real life, but seeing the boom brought up makes me wonder, and so I pose the question, what is so great about that book?
