Has anyone managed to enjoy reading Ulysses? I'm giving it my best shot at the moment but I think I'm fighting a losing battle.

it's enjoyable for like, english majors I guess but to an average reader probably not that enjoyable. Same thing as stuff like Gravity's Rainbow and such.

>> No.1128116

If it's not enjoyable to most people, chances are high it's pretentious bullshit for people who have sunk money into useless degrees. There's a reason most people don't read laughable nonsense like this.

thanks, but I don't need my ego inflated by people whose opinions i don't have any reason to respect.

Yes, I enjoyed it. Took me a while to get into it, but I think it's worth the effort. Stick with it.

Partially THIS. It's a great book and well worth the mental effort to read it all. But most people will only read to be pretentious about it and cosplay on Bloomsday.

Oh, I'm glad we finally have the high school dropout's opinion. Look, I'm sorry you came from a broken home or whatever, but you should really be doing something productive right now, like working with your hands, or studying for the GED.

Looking a bit snobby there

Ulysses is like an ex-girlfriend for me. When we first met it was awkward; after I got to know the book I started to like the descriptions and writing ascetics; for a bit I thought I was in love with the book's incite and wit; then we got into some fights over Shakespeare and I realized it just wasn't working out. Now I haven't seen the book in years. Maybe I'll pick it up again.

As for the Only English Majors Allowed mentality the book has garnered. I'm an engineering student and I got half way through it before I rage quit on it. So take what you will from that.

Wait until you get a week off of school/college/work/w.e

Grab some tea and a bowl of trees.

Clear your mind and slowly read Ulysses without any regard for time or speed (okay, so disregard the slowly part).
Orgasm for hours.

I'm a senior in high school, and I'm planning to study political science and/or history. So.... yeah. Needing to be an English major for that book is like needing to be 18 to use 4chan.

english major here, i thought it was brilliant and recently finished finnegans wake which was about 99x as nasty and fun.

ulysses has a bad rap from retards who've never read it and act as though it's some sort of elitist gospel. it's actually the opposite, and it attacks itself more savagely than any critic could when its dissecting human consciousness like a usyless butterfly wing.

damn now you've got me thinking, and with joyce i can never give an unqualified recommendation. i can say though that reading Ulysses is akin to reading 100 novels in one -- thus, it's harder, but also you're going to get a lot more out of it.

It's just a book, guys. You read it until you run out of pages. If you're not enjoying it, recalibrate your expectations. Imagine that you've found yourself in the woods without your shoes. You're experiencing a lot of sensations right now, and your first thought is probably that it's unpleasant to feel anything, but of course it's not really. Reading Ulysses is much the same.
