AFFC gets an undeserved amount of hate imo. I can't stand Jon and Daenerys, so their exclusion didn't bother me at all. I always found the politics of King's Landing and Westeros to be FAR more interesting than the dragons and ice zombies. The gay fantasy shit really drags the whole series down now that I'm thinking about it. The only real low points of this book are the Iron Islands and Dorne chapters. They have the rare distinction of sucking in the books and the show.

Japanese light novels suck ass though. Even the ones with interesting subjects are utterly unreadable. I've tried to read some that a few of my favorite manga are based on and I had this feeling of being half drowsy and half wanting to throw up whenever I got a few chapters in. With noted exception being light novels that hentai manga is based on, those work for some reason, despite being written in a similar way. They work in set pieces instead of a progression. No wonder it's easy to make them into manga.

Right. I can appreciate trashy power fantasies if they're executed well, but fucking "playing a video game" is just like a anti-power fantasy. It'd be like if Demolition Man ended with some dude pulling a Oculus Rift off their face and going "Wow those graphics were SO REAL!" to the camera.

That's what I've liked about the Poor Man's War series so far. The protagonist is just some kid who joined the military to clear his education debts. His reward for being a big damn action hero is PTSD, dead friends, medals he doesn't care about, a lack of personal relationships because of how chaotic his life is, people trying to use him, etc.

Basically, the system gives you the setting, the players make/control the protagonists (PCs), and the game master (GM) makes/controls the other characters. The plot is set up by the system/GM, but where it goes from there is driven by player choices, ideally.

>> No.11257689

>>11257648
Is a lot more complex than that, is an exercise in continuous story making from the player and the dungeon master (the guy in charge of inventing adventures for to the other players). It depends on the system but you start with a sheet with certain attributes and background story for your character, the dungeon master usually has a story and similar sheets about enemies and others prepared to work for the duration of the game. The sheets are used to calculate actions as if were stuff like the reach of a character's arm, the strength, even mental stats. For example, if a conversation is crucial they do the same as if were a battle and they throw a dice to calculate if the character can outsmart another character in the story. You have to understand that anything can happen. I've seen rulebooks that cover really really well topics like weapons, vehicles, magic, or even biology.

Kino's Journey is one of the few LNs I enjoyed. The books are series of vignettes. The protagonist, Kino, travels a world full of small countries on a motorcycle with the rule to not stay anywhere for more than three days. She travels well-armed and talks to to her motorcycle, Hermes, whom she can hear respond. She visits a lot of strange places and observes, but tries to not interfere, with whatever is going on at each.

How is 3-body regarded so highly? The narrative is abysmal, characterization nonexistent. Author lack a basic understanding of humanity to hate it as much as he does. the weed is one of these things that leads to that, other methods exist too its just convenient for the plot that way in the beginning
its actually a fairly original and well thought out plotline.

Yeah this is probably an issue with the translation. I don't read light novels but I have had this exact problem before with VNs, where the writing seems like some sort of barely comprehensible pseudo-English. It's not that it's grammatically incorrect, but that it's just not idiomatic English. The problem may be that the translator is being *too* accurate and literal and failing to transfer the meaning properly into English, but who knows. The few VNs I have played that actually have competent, non-autistically-literal translations don't have this problem, unsurprisingly, and read naturally.

Dragonlance is fucking great--read the main stories/trilogies by the primary authors. I don't know why most fuccbois here have a hardon for only the Twins interactions.
Don't read the Dragons of a New Age trilogy though; they are good within themselves but they're ignored by the rest of the chronology and it just feels weird, almost as if the reader is the only one who knows about basically all the events in the story.
