How do you feel about female knights? I'm writing a story where the main love interest is a female knight. I want her to be strong and capable but I don't want to fall into the "strong independent woman" meme. She's a good fighter but any slightly above average male warrior would wipe the floor with her due to men just naturally being stronger, she's tough but still feminine and doesn't come off as a raging dyke, shit like that. Any tips?

Brianne of Tarth (in the books) is a brilliant example of a female knight. GRRM write about how she's fighting differently than men, using their expectations against them and trying to get them to spend themselves before she start applying pressure. Also she's fuck hueg and later on equipped with a pseudo-magic sword, enabling her to go toe to toe with and even beat experienced male fighters.

So try to balancing dealing with the fact that she's a woman in a mens world with giving her enough feats so that it does not feel like she's slowing everyone else down. And most importantly, do what you want because people will bitch anyway.

>> No.11245009

>>11244959
My only comments would be for her armour to work she needs to be close to flat chested (this can set up for the cliche "OH she looks so different dressed up blah blah blah" or what ever direction you want to take it).
And as you would already know write her as a person not just as the MC's love interest.

I read a pretty bad book recently set in Japan and they had a women who became a warrior and due to the hair style the warriors all had (long hair tied up), and the baggy clothing made her blend in with the men. She was written as a warrior first and a women second if that makes sense?

>> No.11245019

Sounds like you've got a pretty good grip on the situation. Just keep it realistic and instead of trying to make her some capeshit-tier super-soldier, imbue her with a lot of charisma since a female knight could be really good at inspiring men around her a la Jeanne d'Arc.

I know. That's why I said any slightly above average warrior. If she fought some random run of the mill person then she's going to win 99% of the time regardless of said peasant's gender. But she's not some genius swordsman, she's an average warrior. Put her against a guy around her level then that guy would win 9 out of 10 times. Of course anything can happen in a fight, but I'm just giving a general example.

What's the magic level? You can always equalize shit by making her pilot a magic armor and sword. Then there's more to being a knight than direct combat. You can make her a commander who rarely engages or maybe uses ranged weapons. Knight basically takes heavy armor and ability to survive in mass combat as a must. So you can't really go with the weak but fast trope. So magic, command or freakish strength.

>> No.11245199

Historically, women mainly showed up as knights in periods of internecine violence. For example Raoul II de Tosny's wife Isabel is known to have rode as a knight during a several year long feud with another noble in the area. And generally they were from minor nobility, enough status to get educated and trained but not so much responsibility to keep them heavily involved in courtly politics.

>>11245063
Which can largely be offset by training and skill. Consider that a shorter than average man will be facing similar disadvantages.

I would say it also depends on what a knight is in the world. Is it a type of warrior or a rank granted by the king? If it is the latter there would be a backstory to why she is a knight but it could be harder to work out how she ended up with the MC

>> No.11245275

It also depends on the realism levels and on what her duties would be. If she's more of a policewoman than an armor on armor combatant, it's fine for her to be a normal woman since a trained individual in armor can take on whatever rabble without much problem, and it would be more about her crime-solving skills than combat potential.

Just do extensive research on combat and it'll clear out all your confusions. People are largely unaware of this, but in real life, plate armor made you invincible to anything that isn't a mace or a hammer. Riding a stallion, a full plated knight could kill absurd numbers of footmen. Assuming she's well trained and really, really strong, the outcome of her combat encounters will depend significantly on the sorts of armour she and her adversaries are wearing. If she's smart she'll try as much as possible to stay on horseback.

Feels bad man.
I loved the story and character a lot and in contrast with the previous sci-fi books that I've read this Chink author crafted a masterpiece that is actually interesting as fuck to read.

Stories of:
Ye Wenjie
Cheng Xin
Zhang Beihai
Luo Ji
Thomas Wade
Are very well made and remarkable.
Cheng Xin especially since she was tested the most of all. It was quite something when she failed to meet Yun Tianming at the end of the book. Honestly she failed at pretty much everything she was tasked to do yet at the end she's made the right choice to return back to the galaxy.

ya they do. pound for pound women are much stronger b/c estrogen funnels glucose transporters to the thighs. Which if they're worked out can become jacked.

Sadly their torsos and arms are pathetic in comparison so translation of that strength into the upper body is questionable. If a girl has ever got you in a headlock with her thighs you're in a very precarious position.
You also have interesting routes in balance and marksmanship. both essential.

but if you put a mans armor on a woman she'll wittle b/c its carried by the upper body, whereas a womans armor would essestially be carried on the lower. reducing torso mobility but being much lighter on the upper body. Its weaker to higher leverage front thrusts though, so you need really good balance and posture to wield the armor correctly. also she'd likely fight with a buckler and not a shield.

Kinda ironic that Sophon / Tomoko was basically a Japanese samurai girl that also attempted to genocide the humanity (and Chinese people obviously since it's Chinese POV story).
Why wasn't she mutilated after the failed attempt in Australia though? She continued to live at the same place without a problem it seems which is weird.

Also the fact that Cheng Xin + Sophon finished the story together says quite a lot as well, I guess the author is optimistic about Chinese and Japanese relationships.

He actually addresses this is one of his lectures I watched of his on YouTube (coincidentally, the one that made me start disliking him). He talked about how it's necessary to write every day, even if you know what you're writing is bad and uninspired, because as he put it, the vast majority of your readers can't tell the difference between inspired and uninspired writing.

I know that many authors are in it for the money, but the way he was talking about it just pissed me off, bluntly saying he doesn't care if the quality of some chapters are low because the majority of readers are clueless and won't be able to tell.

I think all writers go in with differing amounts of planning and outline though, so it's not exactly a negative that he half plans. Some start with nothing at all (like George R.R. Martin) and some with everything planned from the beginning in extreme detail (Kevin J Anderson). Sanderson says that he writes with the story planned, but not with the characters planned, so he lets them make the decisions and that can sometimes change the story considerably.

You dont have to relegate her to mediocrity, there is nothing bad in having someone skilled in any field in a book.

Problem with Mary Sues isnt that they are great at something, its that they are great at everything.
You can have her get fucked figuratively not literally, or both in a serious street brawl, lose her confidence, any willingness to fight again only to pick up her weapon again, or make her to rely on others, or just make her avoid fights she cant win, you know some actual journey with some actual difficulties that require solutions that cant be pulled out of the ass on the spot.

well without spoiling anything, Hyperion is a sci-fi take on Canterbury Tales where a group of "pilgrims" go to a planet under siege by a destructive force, and it's implied at the outset that one of the pilgrims is a spy for that force
each tells their story about why they think they were chosen as pilgrims, and you follow their travel through the eyes of the Consul, who is trying to figure out who the spy is based on their stories
so yeah i'd recommend that
the intrigue is more a thread connecting the individual stories, but it's pretty cool
