I unironically doubt your girlfriend has the intelligence to enjoy Dostoevsky. Even if she does, women don't into philosophy.

Yeah give it a chance. Dostoevsky gives a very honest portrayal of both Christians and non-believers. Really read and take to heart the parts with Father Zosima in the novel. Book VI is a beautiful and accurate exposition of the Christian life. I'm prayin for you brother.

She just read Anna Karenina and enjoyed it a lot and is on a general Russian novel tip. I suggested she had started Dosto with the idiot or C&P. Would that have been more appropriate? It seems to be a general consensus here that TBK is one of his denser works.

She should have started those two. Tell her to drop TBK and read C&P instead. There's also White Nights.

It's short and it's worth a read, because it clears a lot of misconceptions about communism, created by the dictatorships that addopted the name.
Still not a working economic and social theory, but it's a 30 minutes read and it's fun.

I actually just finished this, with the Constance Garnet translation. I thought it was very dry and boring, with parts just dragging along. Am I a brainlet or something? Thinking about rereading this with a different translator, because I’ve read McDuffs crime and P&Vs the idiot and those two were really enjoyable

Besides Karmazov, War and Peace and the Bible (the only serious suggestions):

>Most Dickens novels
Especially Tale of Two Cities, Christmas Carol, Little Dorrit

>To Kill a Mockingbird
Fooking Atticus innit, the dad you always wanted.

>Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Fooking Huck Finn innit, the brother you always wanted.

> Most of Austen
Love wins out.

>Dante's Paradiso
Makes me sob with joy, often.

>Whitman's Leaves of Grass

> Four Quartets

>Three Men in a Boat

> Anna Karenina
The Levin and Kitty stuff

> Wind in the Willows

> Anne of Greene Gables

> Orwell's essays
Weird choice, I know, as he wrote about a lot of depressing stuff but there's something so decent about the man that shines through in his prose. When uncle George casts his eye on an insurmountable issue, it starts to feel that bit more manageable.

Any more /lit/?

It was incredibly sad, but I think that was only because it was based in a kind of goodness and innocence I would like to believe exists, somewhere, in the world still.

>Stevens' loyalty to his master, even in the face of the facts and of the derision of those around him
>His adherence to the rules and procedures of a dying way of life, even with the realization of what was happening
>The possible love he could have had with Ms. Kenton - heartbreaking, but both characters were full of a kind of love they seemed scared of, in an innocent way
>The good, humble people of the town

There's more, but I think those things struck me the most.

I heard that this was a rumor spread by FD friends after his death. Supposedly Aliosha was supposed to kill the Czar or something. I don't think it's the truth though. Unless FD thought himself as GURM who'd live to write for over a 100 years.
