Who is this Bataille guy and what should I read from him?

>> No.11197613

Have you already read the Bible, Hesiod, Homer, Thucydides, Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Locke, Hobbes, Hume, Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche and Freud? Do you want to step over several steps at once?

>> No.11197628

All you need to know about him is that when his mother died he masturbated in front of her corpse while his pregnant wife was sleeping nearby.

>> No.11198218

>>11197596

depends what you are interested in, his usual themes follow:

erotism, death, sacrifice, Nietzsche, fascism, surrealism and transgression.

He wrote fiction which was pornographic, religious and erotic all in one. He also wrote a series of 'documents' which are kind of philosophical/sociological/ritualistic meditations of themes like 'the big toe' and 'base materialism'.

He is worth reading but it is worth considering what you want to get out of him in order to encourage a practical experience of Bataille, as the deal is 'it is better to drink the wine and get drunk than just look at the bottle'.

I've always felt lilke he was the evil twin of Barthes.

Anyway OP, you gotta understad early 20th century phenomenology (Mauss, Merleau-Ponty, Bergson), Nietzsche and maybe some anthropology. His book about literature and evil is great in that it will help you with his outlook on authors like Sade and Blake, which are kinda recurent in his work.

Pain, please, when I am elbow deep in your mother's asshole with three sweaty buck negroes a gibbering primitive audience who furiously masturbate themselves across your mother's spectral face in the limerence of our consummation of the thing called life -- our, monsieur, at tha moment, pleasure and pain, they are one, and the versions of us all blur together into a flickering infinity of rapture like the bird whose tittering is the roar of a lion. nothing really ever shocked me much. i wouldn't even call myself "desensitized" or anything -i wouldn't watch gore/torture footage- at least in that it isn't a type of progression. maybe a period if anything. ever since i saw bits of/read about salo as a barely-sexual teen not much stood out afterwards.

i haven't read the major transgressive works yet, but i find it amusing that story of the eye would be one, because it's not too violent. i mean, for something that would be at the very top. i'm always amazed at how seemingly (and this could be out of my own ignorance) uncovered ground there is in the limits of violence. i haven't read de sade yet, but even then, i can imagine there's ground for 'improvement' at least in terms of what's happened to the world since he died. i've tried to get more into peter sotos work, as it seems he is as close as a contemporary to sade as there is. i've heard his sound collages and have read some of the stuff that's available online, but sadly what seems to be his most interesting material is still locked in the realms of physical media - far away from were i could grab it.

i welcomed the egg thing very much though.
