Welcome, frogposter. Like with most boards on 4chan, you can pass easily as >>11205267 notes, but to get the most out of your time, you're better off reading more and posting here only occasionally.

Leave this board and never return if any one of these apply to you:

>you read any form of genre fiction
>you barely know your classics
>you tend to believe that if you like a given work, it is justified on an artistic level
>you think everyone's opinion should be accepted and respected
>you speak a single language
>you read contemporary versions of Shakespeare or Milton
>you read for the plot
>you read for entertainment
>you rarely read nonfiction
>you don't have a solid grounding in philosophy
>you don't have at least have some understanding of the Three Tragedians and Homer
>you have little to no understanding of literature outside of your cultural horizon
>you have little to no understanding of literature within your own cultural horizon
>you mostly read contemporary literature
>you believe 'the author is dead'
>you make your literary analysis proceed from ideology
>you think intricate prose is 'pretentious' and that the author 'should just get to the point'
>your rarely read poetry
>you think Rhythm and Rhyme is just useless rules and laws restricting creativity
>you have a hard time explaining why you like a given work
>you have a hard time forming structured and relevant literary criticism
>you tend to refuse to judge works for yourself, rather relying on the opinions of literary authorities
>you rarely read for more than one or two hours straight

The only thing you’ll learn after reading a few books is how many people (a word I use for lack of a better term to describe the sub-human scum that dwell here) are actually pseuds on this board. So yeah, knock yourself out, you’ll be contributing about as much as everyone else.

This.

I was intimidated when I first started coming here because it seemed like every anon was super smart and knowledgeable about books and philosophy, but then I learned that it's all just memes and now I fit in perfectly.

I haven't read a book since high school.

also, actual reading defeats the point. You don't have to point a telescope at the north star to use it for navigation. You just have to have a general idea of where it's at and where you're at

That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. You either know of Polaris by way of Wiki's edits, or you've read The Almagest and know of how to calculate the distance of the arc from where you are to the equatorial pole, if you know your distance from the equator.

Wikipedia doesn't tell you these sorts of things, you fundamentally learn them by reading you absolute buffoon.

no shit you have to read to learn these things. I'm being partially ironic here, since really, it's great to read a whole book if you really like it. It's just a stupid mindset that the best way to become an "intellectual" is to read as many whole books as possible. New thoughts don't come from that, they come from applying small snippets of information in original ways. you can get that from wiki + formal education + good life experiences in an appropriately aesthetic environment.

>> No.11207773

>just use wikipedia
>just use sparknotes

Anybody with half a brain cell will know if you have a Wikipedia tier understanding of a book, and the only people you'll be impressing with your pseudery are other pseuds. It's almost as though none of you actually enjoy the experience of reading great literature, and just pretend to so as to appear cultured and intelligent.
