With a college level/High school/A level (delete as appropriate) Philosophy textbook. Gives you a good overview of western philosophical thought. Then once you're reasonably knowledgeable from a few of those, you can move on to the texts. But don't read the texts straight off, oh no. Read companions to, introductions to the author/text etc. THEN read the original.

philosophy is a waste of time. just because we are intelligent enough to contemplate our existence doesn't mean we can understand it.

Just found this in my parents bookshelf. Know nothing about it, but would it be an alright starting point?

I like the textbook idea, and plan on picking one up, but would like something a bit less bulky to read while I'm on the bus.

Still liking the textbook idea though.

This is required material for my Phil 101 course. There are discussion questions and analysis for each reading.
