If your solution is essentially "people should be better" I am not sure that is very profound. Forgive me if I misunderstood but is the fact that people are not perfect the very reason we have problems by everyone's account? Both the political right and left think the other is wrong because of this fact. Ergo, socialism won't work because people are going to be lazy if not essentially forced to work, and purely free markets won't work because those in power will take advantage and monopolize. Essentially then any system really would work if people were better.

Is there more to his explanation, or an actual way to solve this problem?

Check out his website, I feel like I can't do the book justice myself. But he explains why people choose to be destructive.When a person is faced with their powerlessness in a situation, they can choose to be wrathful, depressed, hedonistic, mad (mentally insane-like), or ignorant. The section on wrath is the best part of the book imo.
