1117545 No.1117545 [Reply] [Original]

I'm going to be visiting my boyfriend this December, and that means a 36 hour bus ride up there, and a 36 hour bus ride back.

I'm thinking about getting a nook to help pass the time. What can you guys tell me about it?
I was talking with one of the people at the B&N about it, and I noticed a few things that turned me off:
It's not in colour
There's no notepad
The keypad when there is one is tiny
And they said it was just the store version being slow, but whenever it flipped to another page, it showed an inverted version of the next page over the last page and then switched.

How good is it? Are other e-book readers better? Is the 3G worth the extra fifty bucks? Should I get a nook cover for another thirty bucks?

Oh, and what kind of hacks are there?

Is there a notebook app? Any games besides Sudoku and Chess?

I made sure to get one of the brochure, but I'm hoping some of you have actually gotten the nook and can give me first hand experiences.

Huh? I live in Virginia. He lives in Iowa.

Long ride on a Greyhound, and I'm too cheap to buy a train ticket at $400 round trip.

Also, one reason that I'm cheap, but fine blowing my money on a nook (even though I still need to save up for a laptop) is because I can just pirate all the books... And they're a lot cheaper in e-book formate.

>> No.1117565

>It's not in colour
I wouldn't get an e-book reader that was in color if it meant I couldn't read it in direct sunlight. I like reading outside.

I have a Kindle (not 3G) but it's really nice. The keys on the keyboard are tiny, but they're spaced-out so it's not difficult to use. I haven't found it to be slow, and I'm glad I have a cover for it because I don't have to worry about it getting scratched.

Got a PSP. I wouldn't dream of using it to actually read, though. Also that link comes up empty.
>>1117565
Well, I wish it was in colour and the 'e-ink' or whatever.

Doesn't the Kindle have a lit screen? And how much does it run for? Same price, or less?
Because this nook looked really good.

Well you didn't really give any indication of what you were linking to.

I'm not asking which is better, I'm asking what YOUR thoughts are. I'm already looking on Google for that kind of thing, but even on this slow ass board, I'm still getting something closer to a real chat than looking through that stuff.

(Well, okay, I'm actually looking up stuff on nook hacks. But that's because the nook is probably the one I'll be getting)

That's out. Someone upgraded my thing to a custom firmware, and I can't unupgrade it or change it. At least, not until the PSP goes to update 9.1 or so.
Unless I'm just stupid and it's telling me the game won't load for a different reason...

Let me try it again.

>> No.1117611

You -need- custom firmware to use it. Go to settings > system > system information to see what software/firmware you have.

Also for PSP fags:
Using a CPU/Bus Speed of 10/5MHz and a Menu Speed of 222/111MHz (can be set in Bookr`s options), I found that I have around 6-7 hours of battery time with it, although I used to have more (old battery). Bind both left+right arrow and left+right triggers for previous/next page, this way you can flip pages easily no matter which hand you`re holding your PSP with.

Set it to a black background, cream/light brown colored text, use Arial as font and use the lowest brightness level, that way it`s good for reading in the dark. I have personally found that a font size of 16 and a line height of 110 are optimal for me, but obviously everyone should experiment and see what`s better.

Also during day-time/outside dark red text on the brightest white screen works well.

Sorry to butt in on your thread here, but I have a related question. I know that these things are readable in direct sunlight, but does the UV light damage the screens at all?

I actually DON'T want a backlit screen.
I hear that because of the backlit screen, other e-book readers are harder if not nearly impossible to read in the sunlight.
Or that guy just wanted me to buy a nook instead.

>> No.1117703

I sold nooks for a number of months.

- All exclusive e readers that I know of are in black and white. Their screens are not LCD. They are e-ink, and behave differently than most people expect screens to behave.

- Nook is 'software based' which basically means that the software is constantly upgraded and the machines continue to improve. But you will probably always get a flicker at page turns because that's how the technology is. It's not a defect of the machine, it's a process of the e-ink- technology.

- You will not want to do anything but read on this thing. It is not good at typing or notation. It's possible that you can hack it and add games but I haven't looked into that. The web browser works but is -extremely- rudimentary. Smartphones are better for the net.

- If you are the type that pirates you probably do not need 3g unless you want to used the web browser from anywhere. If you're using the machine to travel and expect to purchase books consider 3g. I usually would suggest covers to people who had the machines in bags and expected to travel with them. Might as well.

Overall nook isn't too bad. If you just want to read ebooks it's all you need.

>> No.1117712

>>1117703
Sounds good. I'm not really expecting to play any games on it, though I would like it better if it had a notebook function. A place to save notes on-the-go would be great.

What kind of apps are there? It runs on Android, and the guy at the B&N said that there were a lot of homebrew things for it, and that there was even a free e-book on how to hack the nook.

>> No.1117720

>>1117694
Like I said above, most if not all of the competition uses e-ink, not backlit screens. There's no glare or sunlight damage for anyone.

I sell nook but I got my grandpa a sony (it was really cheap at a yardsale) and it works perfectly fine. I actually like it a little better because it doesn't have a touch screen, uses tactile buttons, and my grandpa prefers to read landscape format, which the nook doesn't do. It also had no network adapter whatsoever, which has not been a problem.

However, the model I bought is discontinued. I don't know if the newer Sonys are the same.

>> No.1117723

>>1117712
It has annotations, but those take -forever-.

I haven't really looked into hacking the nook. I know that people had managed to get a web browser onto the thing before BnN came out with the official version.

http://nookdevs.com/Application_Directory seems like a good takeoff point. There's a note taking app in there even.

>> No.1117724

>>1117720
Really? They are all e-ink?
The guy at the store was saying that there was problems with backlighting for other e-readers. Guess that was wrong.

The Kindle comes in colour, doesn't it? If it's got colour and no glare, then I might get one of those instead. What kind of apps does THAT have? Because I really want a digital notepad that's easier and more portable than a laptop.

It's like the FUTURE is NOW.

The only things that aren't e-ink are machines that aren't exclusively ebook readers, like the ipad. kindle, sony, kobo, whatever, are all e-ink, and are all black and white. I don't think there are any e-ink readers that have color.

You'll have to do your own research with the kindle. It's black and white but I don't know about annotations, and amazon is a bitch so I prefer not to give the company my money if there are better options out there.

I love my nook - they have "free book friday" and you can put any pdf onti its local memory, or you can put in an 8GB chip for storage.

I sat there for about five minutes trying to get the thing to go to another screen, to one of the boxes just off to the edge, poking at the side of it, and pressing the > button.

And yes, you can add notations to your books, bookmark or highlight things, or perform basic text searches in specific books or your whole library.

And to be perfectly honest, between the Nook and the Kindle, it's pretty much the choice of carrying around a Barnes and Noble logo or an Amazon logo, and Barnes and Noble just has that extra ting of shit to it in my opinion.
