I thoroughly enjoyed those too anon. I think the closest to a guilty pleasure would be the first few Horus Heresy books and the Eisenhorn trilogy, but I hesitate to call it a guilty pleasure at all as they're legitimately quite good.
As much as this board will shit on you for it, not everything you read has to be the Greeks or Jordan B Memerson. If you find it fulfilling and enjoyable to read, read it and have fun. Who cares what a bunch of people on a Vietnamese MySQL developers forum have to say.

I've always been painfully in love with natural history. Even as a baby I would demand to be read animal encyclopedias at bed time. I'm very lucky my mother did that for me.
Studying natural history allows you to read what Bateson called the "syllogisms in the grass" no formal literature comes close to the poetics of living. It makes me so sad that humans are losing touch with it, the common ground of all art that we have been nested in for all of evolutionary history and with all our gifts to understand it we are alienated from it. Not being able to share the experience with people around makes me very lonely, especially when I was young. I still feel a connection to all the life surrounding me but the ecologically literate people who can relate a feeling of mutual understanding back to me have been few and far between.

Have you read anything by Alistair Maclean? I recommend "Fear is the key." Maclean is a thriller writer that knows not over stay his welcome. As much as I enjoyed "Killing Floor," a good number of thrillers have no reason to be longer than 300 pages. I tried "Persuader," by Child, and the padding was noticeable. Still I respect him.

I didnt like Eisenhorn as much. Shit inconnex stories, abrupt endings and some of Abnett's worst writing overall. I was very disappointed because I came into Eisenhorn after reading the others and thinking I was leaving the best for last. I dont understand the love for Eisenhorn at all.

Worst of what I read, I had no desire to carry on with ravenor and such after the Eisenhorn trilogy.

Some of the HH books are p lame, yes, its a mixed bag, but the good ones I liked a lot. HHwise I pretty much disliked all anthology books, those short stories were useless 99% of the time.
