The edition I read definitely suffered from the translation - you could tell he was using idioms and slangy, casual speech, but it was all just translated literally and it came out terribly stilted.
I don't know if there's a good English translation but it would have to be quite a loose one because you'd need to translate all the idioms into English equivalents, etc.

I enjoyed the colonial parts. Especially about the guy who sacrificed his future for his daughter or sister back in Europe.

Anyways OP it's a super pessimistic book. Doesn't pull any punches about the hard and bitter truth about life, the one we all try to deny but is always in the back of our mind, each and every one of us. It can be very tender as well.
