How does one improve at writing without external criticism? Deliberate practice dictates that one should always practice on the very edge of ones ablities. It's easy to know where that is in other art forms such as music and painting, but what about writing?

With writing it's not that difficult once you get the hang of it. Just keep experimenting with different types of language, metaphors, writing techniques etc.

I typically get inspirated by stumbling upon, say, a theme or technique that I've never used before in a book/picture/song, and then I try to challenge myself by writing a poem using said theme or technique.

Also, don't listen to Gladwell. Half his stuff is pseud shit. Like, he unironically thinks that Chinese people are so good at calculus and linear algebra and stuff like that EXCLUSIVELY because the Mandarin words for numbers are slightly more logical than in English (e.g. the Mandarin word for "twelve" literally means "ten-two").

The rule of 10k hours is also really generalizing. It e.g. assumes that'll take just as long for a German native speaker to master the Dutch language as it'll take for them to master the Japanese language.

Sitting down and writing is the only way to become a writer. Becoming a better writer requires dedication to perfecting grammar, syntax, past, present, perfect and future tenses, utilizing narrative mechanics such as foreshadowing, double entendre, metaphor, simile, attuning one's ear to the parlance of the times and effectively translating and conveying proper meanings, avoiding malapropisms, concentrating efforts to the subjects one wishes to describe, remaining truthful in one's intentions, developing recognizable style, knowing the difference between poetry and prose, knowing what one enjoys about reading and why writing is attractive in the first place. Most of these attributes can be developed by sitting down and writing.

Don't just put the hours in, but make them effortful hours

Here's your homework for the next few days (based on an original idea by Flaubert):

Pick however many well-known people you want (living or dead, real or fictional) and write short descriptions of them in any style you like, using any technique you like, but without including any give-away specifics. Post these descriptions on /lit/ and see if we can identify the people.

>(i) Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.

>(ii) Never use a long word where a short one will do.

>(iii) If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.

>(iv) Never use the passive where you can use the active.

>(v) Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.

>(vi) Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.

No. The 10,000 hour thing is based on a study which examined people who are at the pinnacle of their fields, people who are the top 1% of crafts, trades, academia ect. You can't just apply that to a language, skill, or anything else in particular that you want. For the most part your next statement about immersion is correct though. However, you can learn basics and speak well enough after as little as two weeks.
To get back to the point, it's only about 20 hours of learning that's required to reach an amateur level provided it's targeted, goal orientated learning.
