Hey /lit/, wandering /co/mmrade here. Is there a list of good horror stories compiled? If not, could I get some recommendations? I've read Frankenstein, Dracula, and some others. Thanks in advance!

Pic related, its one of our scaries.

The Monk is a must read.
Also try Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

You've read the works of Poe and Lovecraft, right?

I know that probably goes without saying, but I'm just checking.

I've read Jekyll and Hyde (loved it), and some of Poe's work, but nothing of Lovecraft yet. I don't know why, but I can't get into Stephen King. I liked the first Dark Tower book, but I can't get through any thing else of his.

What else is good? Bonus points for stuff off the beaten path.

You have to get on that. He's the MASTER of horror literature. You can even read them all online, there's no reason not to have.

Sweet! Thanks STLFag, you rock! Any other horror stories, short or long? I'm really looking for stuff that's a bit esoteric.

Btw, where should I start? I've heard At the Mountains of Madness is his first, but I'm not sure...

Start with his shorter stories; At the Mountains of Madness is relatively difficult. Once you've got the hang of his style, it becomes much more enjoyable. For some shorter stories, check out:

The Statement of Randolph Carter
The Outsider
The Colour Out of Space
Haunter of the Dark
Ex Oblivione (a beautiful fantasy-style prose poem)

I hate to ask this, but could you tell me where you found this wallpaper? I really enjoy it and I'm curious if there are more that are similar to it.

Okay, so I'll start with these then. I take it there isn't really an order?

I've got some like it, I'll dump what I've got. They make great wallpapers (inb4 /wg/ is that way)

I like Joe Hill's short story collection, 20th Century Ghosts. Not all of the stories are horror, but most are, and it's a pretty good, award winning debut- especially since the author spent ten years slogging away under a pen name rather than have "BY STEPHEN KING JUNIOR" printed in giant letters on the cover.
