Because Tyrone's great, great, great granpappy was named after the white, New-English do-gooders who freed him.

Did you not read the book? It's a rhetorical question, I know you didn't. How do I know? Because this exact question is directly addressed by Pynchon (fairy early on, too, I think)

Well, good on you for taking your time to enjoy the books you read. You'll probably retain more that way, anyway. If it's your first time through Gravity's Rainbow though, you're better off without the Companion. I don't have a copy myself, but from what I've heard it has a fair number of errors and has lots of stuff missing. Try to piece it together yourself. I still recommend looking up words you don't know, especially the parts in French and German, along with looking up historical references, equations, etc.

Nah, the errors are minor and pretty much corrected in the second edition. It's really quite impressive how exhaustive it is, and the errors I'm aware of are very minor details. I'd say it's enriched my experience with the book a fair deal and has helped me grasp its structure to a greater extent than I'd have been able to do without it.

Completely unrelated, but the part in The Counterforce where Pynchon starts talking about Tarot cards may be one of my favorite parts of the book. I just love when it goes into full spooky occult mode.
