Hi /lit/. I recently acquired these two books. Should I read one before the other? Thanks for any info.

in that order

You should probably read Magick Without Tears first.

If these are your first works by Crowley, you're pretty screwed. You'll need the commentaries to understand the Book of the Law, and the Book of Lies is a very dense career-end summary of his work.

You can find the commentaries here:

Neither is an ideal starting point, but definitely Lies second--it's very obtuse and full of weird arcane jokes. I agree Magick Without Tears and maybe 777 first. If you're really new to the whole post-Golden-Dawn ceremonial magic stuff, I suggest A.E. Waite before Crowley, especially his White Magic, Black Magic, Ceremonial Magic, Key to the Tarot. Crowley was reworking a lot of the GD material. There are collected GD flying rolls (essays they used to trade around privately) and Regardie's big Golden Dawn book: both are great. It depends how much orientation you need.

Those numbers haunt me.
I've noticed - or rather, I am forced to see - that the occultism scene is all about control. Don't go there, go here instead! This is the truth, not the other ones!
Then I hear Alan Watts and his explanation on gurus. I despise his explanation of divine equality everywhere in a continuum. Though I cannot explain it away.

So let's go through this quickly. You are not a teacher, and I am not a student. Is there anything for you to give us from that book, to lure us in?

Alright, I'll state it quickly. Crowley is essentially the equivalent of pseud in /lit/ terms, he knew what he was doing was false and was making it up. Same with Blavatsky, who is even worse with that type of stuff.

For the book part, it is simple, there are metaphysics that must be applied first in order to get rid of any prejudices that the modern world as a whole leaves you with. Cyclical history, a lunar symbolism of spirituality that leads to a downfall of the Self, the hero who fails and the god who succeeds. Crowely just takes this symbolism, doesn't understand it, and mishmashes it here and there.

The Golden Bough is essential reading for anyone serious about Anglo esoteric thought. Crowley is the product of anglo-israelism
