ITT: Books that left you feeling uncomfortable.

Maybe the book is literary shock value, or maybe it's a book that got a little too real, a little too relatable for you. What ever that book is, I would like to hear about it.

John Williams' Stoner made me reconsider a career in teaching and marriage in general. Don't want to go through what Stoner goes through.

Also Notes From Underground was uncomfortable, but in a cautionary tale kind of way. Like, I've felt frustration and depression before but reading that book made me feel like I never wanted to get to the point like Dostoevsky's protagonist who really is just a mumbling fucking mess.

In Platform there is a sentence that goes like - anything can happen in life, especially nothing, that kind of brutal, down to earth, truth shocks me.

the story of the eye made me wince a few times
huysmann is uncomfortable reading
ryu murakami is uncomfortable-lit especially in the miso soup the part with the sliced ear placed into a woman's vagina has stuck with me years after reading the book

American Terrorist

The fact that I agree with many of Tim McVeigh's beliefs (in principle) and the realization that there are millions of people like him (and me) who are just a few bad experiences away from blowing up a building.

I hate to think I'm just a product of chemical reactions in a chaotic world

From what I've looked up his book is an educated guess more than fact and humans are more complex than he leads on though

In Cold Blood for me; i have lived a lot of my life on the margins, since childhood and even ended up in jails a number of times, and I identified with Perry because I have lived with the same lingering vague ideas of freedom somehow somewhere and also because if i look at my actions objectively a lot of them were borderline sociopathic; so the book just made me feel really fucked up inside like how close am i to just murdering someone, probably in a blackout..nothing to ever change the fact that i am fucked inside.

Of course Rant would make you uncomfortable.
>children playing with real organs in the dark
>the abuse Rant suffers and the psychopathic things he does to his community and then the wider world
>the spiders
>the cyberpunk horror of downloading memories and tweaking them by running them through the brains of other people
>the day/night class system
