Like, Europe is plump with states that have not yet overflown into a somewhat chaotic nation of individuals, rather than a continent full of states to which individuals adhere

The introductory sentence for Portrait is far worse than this, and is a greater proof that people who read and write and criticize literary ficiton are idiots who can be rejected out of hand. I correctly excoriated them before you made this thread, a few weeks earlier, in like terms.

>Smugly, lewd Bert Mortensen took a trip of three steps from the top of the stairs, having just learned that his momma had died that day; or was it the day before? The sky above Howth castle and environs was the colour of a 404'ed 4chan thread. He was a man of many twists and turns who, while walking in the woods at about the midpoint of his life's journey, saw the spirit of God hovering above the face of the waters.

>maman died, etc
The Stranger
>a man of many twists and turns
The most subtle one - the word "polytropos" literally means many-turned and describes Odysseus at the beginning of the Odyssey. It's a cool word that always gets translated slightly differently, and "a man of twists and turns" was used in one translation, can't remember which. That woman who just translated it was mocked on /lit/ because she translated it as "complicated."
>walking in the woods at about the midpoint of his life's journey
The Divine Comedy
>the spirit of God hovering over the face of the waters
Genesis
>Bismillah
The first words of the Quran and traditionally the first words in a bunch of other Islamic stuff. Literally means "in the name of the lord" or something.

Also I forgot to say that "he quipped" is almost definitely a leak from /tv/ making fun of Marvel movies.
It feels strange to be able to read this far into something that would just seem like poorly-constructed nonsense to most people. Reading TLoTiaT felt similar - every page is inundated with meaning that is literally completely incomprehensible to anybody who isn't intimately familiar with not only 4chan culture but the specific styles of shitposts native only to /lit/. There might be, what, 10,000 people on earth who cam actually get everything there is to get in that book? Less? And in 100 years, if any extant copies of the book still exist, the number of people who can really, truly grasp it will be zero.
Makes me wonder how much of everything I read is going way over my head. Fuck.

I've always felt memes are partially a call-and-response password system to check if the person you're talking to is /really/ part of your in-group.

Like posting WHEN I WAS on /b/ or STANDING on /v/ or You're a big guy on /tv/. All of these phrases are a call, and they all have a response: A YOUNG BOY, ON THE EDGE, for you.
