I'd like to know how you classify "common knowledge". If it's based on how accessible said knowledge is, then you've got a point since intricate scientific knowledge isn't readily accessible outside of universities.

However, if you're basing it on what is generally assumed as "common knowledge" (general facts and trivia that most of us have gained through the internet, television and primary/secondary education) then I have to disagree.

History major here, and I prefer the University Library, to be honest. Our public library doesn't carry the same range of specialist literature for historical study. It carries enough for a basic understanding of much of history, but when you really want to get into the nitty-gritty details of a period/event/culture, then you really do need some very specific historical literature that you'll usually only find in a well-stocked University Library.

Nature doesn't give two shits about your art, it's a made-up concept. Art is nothing but a petty attempt to emulate the beauty that nature already has.

I really don't understand this thread. To say that all knowledge contained within a humanities major is available at a public library is obviously wrong, so why are we sitting here being trolled into oblivion by a child that is either so starved of attention he feels he needs to deliberately annoy people on the internet or so insecure he can't fathom for a second that anyone would want to study in a different faculty?

Scientific literature being harder to access is hardly indicative of its worth to society. The truth is scientific research (among many other things, such as economics) gives us the standard of living we enjoy today, as well as the means through which we can study not only more science, but also literature/history/philosophy/political science, etc. Scientific research should not be discounted, but concurrently neither should humanities.

lol at the implication of an objective observation of art. ofcourse art is a made up concept just like everythign else we perceive (science as well) but the fact its a human interpretation of the world around us doesn't mean it can't have value. the human interpretation of the world is art and is what makes art beautiful
