Big Sur is a lot more contemplative than the earlier novels. It's basically an account of him dealing with the incredibly obnoxious "beats movement" that had sprung up around them, and trying to both reclaim some of the vitalism of their youth and come to terms with it being gone. Yes, i really disliked it. Good ideas basically abandoned while author self-inserts herse;f as a genius millionaire business-woman with a couple of genius millionaire lovers. Story is shitting on collectivist parasites, shlicking on how smart and ambicious she or her lovers are, then more shitting on collectivism. This is the plot for WHOLE book.
Most people agree that this book became somewhat popular only because of anti-communism propaganda in america during that time period.
God this is fucking women's romance novel.

I had an interest in the Roman Empire but I feel like this is way too advanced for me. I'm still kind of reading it, but I feel like the only way I can get through it is to be by a computer because I'm not THAT well versed with Roman Empire history.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to literature I can read about the Roman Empire? One that can help supplement any prior knowledge that would be helpful for "Decline and Fall?"

I think you're missing the point. Stoicism isn't a call to complacency or passivity, it's a recognition of the inherent transience in all human endeavor. We have to die one day and that knowledge, though terrifying, can be a tool to help us consider what is truly important in our lives. At least as it appears to me, stoic tenets are about striving to improve yourself to the best of your ability.

You can't obtain all knowledge, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't read. You can't become a perfect judge, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't aim for better discernment. All in the same vein that, though one day your body is guaranteed to wither and fail you, that doesn't preclude that exercise now will improve you for a time. Climb what mountains you may while you can, but try to discern which heights are most worth viewing.

Stoics say not to become emotional or irrational over things that can’t be helped. Here’s a really simple example: You can’t stop the rain. There’s no point in getting mad at it. Instead of cursing the rain you should do what you can about it, like wear a jacket and use an umbrella. What you’re saying is Stoics believe you should just be rained on.

You sound like a really fun person. But to dismiss Celine entirely for his political actions shows your ignorance of his influence over French lit, I bet you read it in translation you absolute pseud. De Man's work is still just as worthwhile even after it was discovered that he collaborated and wrote anti-Semitic articles for the Belgian collaborationist press. The "anything I don't like that could be construed as right wing is /pol/" argument is stupid.
