i think you mostly can, but it doesn't work for all things and it fucks up literary translations. i remember nabokov going on about how he'd translated his russian works into what he'd have written if he was writing it in english, because there's so many phrases and expressions that don't carry the same meanings in russia as they do for english speakers. some try to translate those too, and give footnotes on the context of the meaning, and all those niggling details, but speaking a different language makes you think differently about a lot of things. how figurative a language is, or how primitive it is, or how context dependent it is, makes it harder to match it to others. things like "snuff out the many suns" to mean "turn out the lights" in everyday sentences become reams of footnotes in some cases, and the author doesn't mean to be figurative, but "turn out the lights" has no other phrasing in the original language and wouldn't be understood as poetic.

French culture is a bastardization of Italian, and has been for the last two thousand years.

Italian, Spanish, Russian, Classical Arabic and Greek are the best languages to know, for the true and discerning intellectual.

Maybe, after you've learned the essential languages, study a bit of Portuguese for the beauty, or to pretend that you know latin. It's easy enough to find translations of the occasional decent book that finds itself written in French. The Chinese already speak more languages than you but they'll only communicate in the language of commerce; unless you're interested in calligraphy don't bother with Chinese.

I think it is possible to make art, however there are definite limits in what are possible. I am not trying to say that all languages are equal, as they are anything but. My point is simply that art can be made in any language. This is not to say that a Proustian masterpiece can be made in a non-written african language, just that the arrangement of language can be used to make art. There is significance in that. I think that ignoring languages or not taking them seriously on account of a sense of European superiority (a feeling which I sympathize with fully) is useless. There is something to be gained through study of language, whether the three suggested in OP or not. Even the most primitive tongue of savages holds complexity from which to learn.

I am not convinced of this. In terms of pure utilitarian usage of language, such as: 'there are two books', I agree. I think that certain concepts are tied to the language in ways different than simply the literal meaning of each word. For example, The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man can only express its exact intent in English. There is always something lost in translation with a complex piece of art, more-so with certain languages (English translates to German better than English translates to Chinese and so on)
