The idea of reading books appeals to me a great deal. I'm able to appreciate aesthetics (in music and visual art at least), and would love to be able to be swept into a dense narrative with rich characters and the like.

However, when I read I feel mostly nothing. Maybe I'll like a phrase or two, but the overall narrative doesn't impact me at all. I read Brother's Karamazov and really didn't care about anything that occurred. I'm trying to read some short stories, specifically from Dubliners, tomorrow, but honestly, should it really be this hard?

Am I just emotionally underdeveloped or what? Anyone who has any tips on enjoying literature is welcome.

Also, what was the most fun book you've ever read? I want something that you think will make anyone want to keep turning pages.

Just read for enjoyment until you want something more from reading, not the opposite. Reading is more enjoyable than any other art when you're into the story, but is horrible when you're not. If you haven't grown up reading, it's going to be difficult.

I don't know how to "enjoy" literature, I don't want anything else at this point but enjoyment.

That's not how it works.

Smutt, violence, strong male protag who has revenge. History you are interested in. Are you incapable of enjoying tv shows?

Do you visualize what you are reading?
You have to imagine every aspect of it, the smell of the area, the emotions the characters are feeling, the taste of the food they eat, every little thing you have to assume. Once you imagine it all then you become enthralled in it

i genuinely think reading literature is bottom of the barrel when it comes to pure entertainment value, i just find it relaxing and can appreciate good prose

the last literary works i properly enjoyed (as much as I enjoyed reading eragon or whatever the fuck as a preteen) were the picture of dorian gray and the book of the new sun, if you count the latter as literature. maybe give those a try

No? I thought stuff like the genre fiction NYT bestsellers are designed to be as enjoyable as possible to as many people as possible. I was hoping there's some trashy easy to read fun novel out there that I can get into

First read a few light, fluffy books. For something simple yet still palatable to adults I'd recommend Island of Doctor Moreau. After that exercise, move on to a book that is very long by your standards. Anything that you think your might not be able to to finish that.

Then you'll have the correct mindset for reading the classics.

I have this problem where I only really *enjoy* modern literature because it speaks to my sensibilities much more directly. Try pic related.

This is what I have been thinking recently. I not a very visual person and I don't tend to think about other people's emotions. When I listen to music I just want to feel the raw energy from it, I can't stand sappy narrative focused /mu/core shit.

Unironically read Warrior Cats. They're not good, but they're like melted butter for the eyes and mind. There are literally no books easier to read than Warrior Cats, it's probably not a good trait, but it's impressive as all hell

Read Henry James or Proust. They're big comfy books about psychology and the particulars of their characters. There's usually no pressure to finish them and you can kind of inhabit them and come back at a later time like an old friend. I've heard Musil is like this too.

You just haven't found anything you enjoy enough to be swept away by. Keep at it.

Vague question, but try Tortilla Flat or 100 Years of Solitude.

Maybe start with something that has more comedy in it? I know a few people that have gotten into reading through something like A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or Good Omens

It works that way and there are many books like that.
/lit/ is just so far up it's ass most people get an aneurysm when some says he enjoys reading the latest Dan Brown.
But it's also not wrong. There are tons of places where you can talk about the latest bestseller Thrillers and can get thousands of recommendations. /lit/ is not the place for that since the Index would be flooded with the xth "hai gais :------DD I love Harry Potter, what to read next?" recommendation thread.
There is nothing wrong with reading stuff from a bestseller list, just don't post your vlogs about it here.
