messy, confusing nonsense, where the plot does exist but is only barely alluded to, and where the appeal is more the style and atmosphere?

I'd say Neuromancer's out, if only because of the nature of the reveal and the tying of loose ends.

Maybe Felt Meanings of the World for a drier read, Gardens of the Moon for fantasy/anthropology, Dervish House for sci-fi, Aria for /tg/, Magic: History/Theory/Practice by Doc Schertel (annotated by Hitler, no less) for non-fic, and Wizard of the Crow for /lit/.

If you want silly/mindfuck try Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect if it's still kicking around in some archive somewhere on the net.

I was going to argue against you because I believe Lain's the collective unconscious present in the wired and not some naturally evolved consciousness born by the wired, but since Eiri gave her free will and sentience, you can say she technically did evolve from the state she was in.

Not really existentialist, but a mindfuck-based polysemous interpretation of being/living/perspective, mixed into a sombre slice of life feel.

The Nihon term is "psycho=drama."
It includes things like Psychopass, GITS, Ergo Proxy, Ranpo Kitan, Madoka Magica, Boku Dake ga Inamachai, some say Dennou Coil, but that's pushing it into more cheery stuff.

Sometimes Higurashi and Mirai Nikki are included, too.

if the first bit relates to FLCL, then Invention of Morel might be okay for you too, but it relies on a technological device, so if it is not sci-fi and still needs to have mindfucks from double meaning, and slice of life:
>early Waugh
>Saki
They are humorous though so YMMV if you need it to be just darkness and not dark with humour, and Waugh is the more sombre of the two if you need more darkness. Saki writes short stories. Both about British upper classes. Neither are overall happy.

Give more details and someone might get closer. Or maybe a fellow anime watcher would be more help.

>Explicity stated I don't know enough of Western thought to articulate what it is, other than the actual title of the genre.

None of that related to FLCL, which is considered happy-go-lucky lessons in moral absolutism and the universality of weirdness in coming of age stories. What I wrote pertained to Lain.

Idk if you think I'm OP or some other poster though. >>11024926 isn't too far off I think.

Oh, now I get it.

Any suggestions for a sombre atmosphere'd psychological drama, à la mindfuck? The Lain thing has me curious. Only thing I can think of is maybe Gene Wolfe/Book of the New Sun if that even counts as /lit/, though it's pretty straightforward. Sum by Eagleman but that's real iffy.

>>11025144
That's a generic military-harem anime, Oliver Twist if you want to go with young male MC. Ulysses for military, but Joyce is ever a patrician choice. 1434 if you don't mind China & historical fiction over strictly /lit/. Uhuru Street if you just want the slice of life aspect.
