Is it okay to steal books?

>> No.11013608

No, stealing books is wrong. That never stopped me though.

It's wrong if it's an independent bookstore that's actually hurt by the loss. Unless the people working at the bookstore can then steal the resources they would get with the money from the book, like food and shelter. But then, maybe if they supplied the books for you to take for free, and you supplied the food and/or shelter for them, and everybody worked to simply support the community, with the knowledge that the resources of the community would be divided between everyone equitably...

giving money to organizations that publish the books i'm interested in allows them to continue publishing future books, following my tastes because they're incentivized to
those who steal books, particularly niche titles (because major works like the bible won't go out of print, nor will a future better bible be produced despite of my willingness to pay for one) act against their interests

Not when we can now get PDF books for free with a single google search. Buy an iPad and read free PDF books. You can even annotate and edit them.

With this method you can get a book the second you want it and start reading seconds later. Plus you can get thousands and thousands instantly. With stealing you'll only ever get a few at a clip tops. Then you don't need to go out and plan a heist every time you want a new book to read like some tattered street urchin.

You can buy most books online for under $5. Why risk getting arrested or at least embarrassed by being caught stealing?

I mean, you shouldn't steal full stop, even if it's a book in the public domain. The publisher pays for the pages, the ink, the binding, the cover, etc. Stealing from a bookstore franchise isn't ideal either because you start hurting a business that is offering jobs to people who need them
