I mean, he's not, but I like that he's gotten through, or at least made an honest attempt to get through, to some more people and convince them to at least attempt critical thinking. Hopefully, they'll continue and discover even more work.

Small moves, Ellie.

He has some really good, insightful ideas, mixed in with a whole lot of nonsense. He's basically the Osho of western philosophy.

he's the greatest philosopher/writer/thinker of the last 18 months or so.

still, that's pretty cool, and more than most of us on /lit/ are going to do.

He is the Tolstoy/Freud/Dostoevsky/Kafka of our generation, except he truly makes me motivated to go out and attack life. His first chapter of 12 Rules for Life... Don't Slouch your shoulders and the raw masculinity he inflicts on his wife are just so majestic.... I'm a lobster

"12 Rules for Life" and "Maps of Meaning". I haven't read either but from what I've heard "Maps of Meaning" had a lot more work put into it and it really shows. It's free as a PDF from his website.

Maps of Meaning is very good and yes I agree, 12 rules for Life is normie self help for people who have never read philosophy, It's boring, rushed, and doesn't say anything interesting, plus he goes off topic every couple of sentences

it's a boring book. but my own feeling is that when you basically will your own Thought into law and have university departments spring up across the middle kingdom dedicated to Thinking that Thought it's a tough act to follow.

again, he falls into the 'last 18 months' category. not the last 100 years. that still goes to either wittgenstein or heidegger.

even if i am partial to >>11007996 as well.

But does it count if he "willed" his "Thought" into law and those university departments sprang up across the middle kingdom under threat of the barrel of a gun? Please note, I barely know anything of his philosophy and I certainly haven't read that book so I don't know if there's anything particularly groundbreaking in it. I guess I'm just asking if all you care about is the amount of people being learning your thought, forced or otherwise, to be the most important?

of course it's not about the sheer number. this is why in my earlier post i said
>assuming xi jinping does not count

because these are different things. xi is That Guy in china. if he had written a quirky series of short stories or pulp fiction it would have sold a billion copies anyways.

so it's not like i think measuring the amount of people being forced into learning your thought is *everything*...and yet, at the same time - isn't this at least part of how we gauge literary influence?

at least in some sense the numbers do matter. but of course we're comparing different things here. if you're the Governor and you tell the Governed to read the Book of Governance, and they do...it's a little bit different than nailing the #1 spot on amazon.

you get the idea.

So I'm currently reading 12 rules. So far, it's been some interesting facts about lobsters followed by 100 pages of rambling about fucking Christianity. It's not what I was expecting at all. I get the feeling he's trying to convert me. Does it get better?

>> No.11008490

>>11007936
His genius was in realizing that contemporary Western society is so cucked and millennials are so deep in existential abandonment he could convince them to believe any idea just by tying it into a somewhat plausible and doable ethical system that would keep them occupied for the rest of their lives.
I'm honestly kind of disappointed he only went as far as spreading traditional Christian values instead of trying to conquer the world or Newfoundland or something.

Well then no, I don't count xi jinping at all. If I disagree entirely with the work that I or a billion others are being forced to read at the barrel of a gun, then no, I disagree that he counts at all.
