I read it for the smut and fluffy romance.

Only read top tier fanfiction (meaning, reads better than your average YA novel), but for your favorite series/pairing you can indulge in a little worse. Every few fics/chapters, if you get the urge to read it, force yourself to pick up a book instead. You'll need the reminder of what actual literature and good writing is anyway, before fanfiction turns your brain into mush. It can also make reading fanfiction more enjoyable when you do this, because 1.) you reset your standards and 2.) after some hard reading, it can be a good break to read something dumb.

If you like fan-fiction so much you should read My Immortal. It's a real piece of... art.
