You're slightly correct you miss the vast differences now, and the future of the internet. Realize, and actually think of how the internet is going to grow. It's going to grow to be niche again. Deeper you go into the web, the more niche holes you look to fill.

Anyway, returning to the OP's central point, I do think there are going to be some good writers that, eventually, will reveal that they spent time on /lit/.

This board can be shitty, but it also manages to make the people who post here aware of writers, thinkers, and poets that they wouldn't otherwise find out about. I know I've been made aware of a bunch of different writers and thinkers thanks to this board.
