I just finished reading the first book in that series, Age of Myth. It was embarrassingly bad. The plot seemed like it could have gone somewhere interesting at the beginning even if the writing style was simplistic and not very clever, but then it basically abandons the character you start with and the supposed inciting incident. Instead it focuses on a trio of superior female characters who are all special and talented and smart and an incredibly pointless side story that, by the end of the book, leaves the overall plot in more or less the same position it was in at the beginning of the book. You could literally edit this whole book down to about 100 pages and just kept going from there instead. Not to mention, the guy you thought was gonna be a Conan the Barbarian type ends up being a beta orbiter for a woman almost 20 years his senior and is infatuated with her to the point where he lets himself be used by her and she knowingly takes advantage of his interest without really giving a shit about him. Oh, almost every male character turns out to be a shitter in some way. Except for the disabled guy, who is good like almost all the women.

Still has cultivating but with a different medieval flavor to it. >> No.10984361

I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I'd say that in film, visual storytelling is a thing, which you can play with a lot in a sci-fi setting, while in a book it's all about the writing, so something that would be an amazing spectacle on screen would just be kind of weird in text.

>> No.10984372

>>10984340
That's a good question though In don't recall sci fi films being held in high regard until relatively recently (outside of Kubrick). I think that perhaps the special effects department has increased in quality the last 10-20 years which helps because up until about the 90's, sci fi movies felt dated and cheesy very quickly. For instance, Logan's Run and Silent Running were killer movies back in the day, but do not look anything but tacky now.

>> No.10984376

The sequels are not bad at all. The first book is just much better. Probably could have milked the notVenice setting for all the books, and i think moving away from that setting and tone is what made Red Seas more underwhelming to some people. A huge fucking glass tower for nobles, and so much more that may have been in Camorra.

I was a bit peeved by the big reveal in RoT, though that's just my taste and it can go both ways

I mean I'm sure that's part of it, but it seems like in film people recognize that you can get at real issues, both socio-political and very personal (not that the two don't overlap) through speculative means and in books there are a lot of people who don't realize that at all.
>>10984372
If we branch out to speculative fiction in general, the Wizard of Oz is a fantasy story. The original 1954 Godzilla is a masterpiece of a film and has a Criterion Collection edition. You might be right that the differences were not as pronounced until recently, though. After all there are some SF books that are recognized as great even by people who normally treat genre fiction as nothing but pulp.

In terms of inexhaustibility, nothing comes close. Maybe nothing will ever come close. Consider becoming a no-joke antiquarian scholar if that's what you're really after.

However, for some actual recommendations: The Solar Cycle (Book of the New Sun) is probably your best bet. It gets memed a lot but only because it is truly that good. If you can appreciate LOTR you shouldn't have a problem with it.

If you like the "long journey" aspect of LOTR but don't mind a step down in quality try Tad Williams, starting with "Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn". Slow-paced, meandering fantasy journeys.

For something slightly more episodic, check out the Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny.

I'd also recommend the Majipoor series by Robert Silverberg starting with Lord Valentine's Castle. This series doesn't quite take itself as seriously as Williams' books. Williams writes like he does because that's all he can do; Silverberg is deliberately kicking back to write a leisurely story after maintaining a John Grisham-tier writing pace for 20 years.

I'm not a fan of The Wheel of Time but multiple people will recommend it and if you're desperate enough you'll probably pick up The Eye of the World, become enthralled, and slog your way through to the end.

/sffg/, quick help?

My heroine is a loli who, despite acting like a complete weirdo and possibly being autistic, is an astrophysics prodigy with a skeptical outlook on anything supernatural. However, she winds up in a fantasy adventure and is forced to come to an understanding magic through a scientific perspective

The problem is that while she has major personal reasons to not want to believe in magic, she needs to warm up to in order to get the first major plot event. As a result there's basically an 80 page gap in a 250 page book where very little happens.

Shame that's rare these days. Too many writers are trying to shoehorn in the strong female character meme. Now I have no problem with strong female characters, in fact I enjoy them. He's also a traditionalist Catholic and proud of it, which of course makes certain people mad as fuck.

Even as someone who isn't bothered by any of the above, stay away from his blog. Wright clearly likes to write, and his blog is full of hastily dashed-off and completely unedited bloviating that doesn't live up to even the most amateurishly-edited of his published writing.

That being said, if you can love Count to a Trillion (I do too; it's good) then you'll probably like most of Wright's work.

I'm not the guy who repeats how much he hates x all the time, I just wrote it as an afterthought.
Everyone reccomended it, oh how it was far better and much more complex than GRRM. So sure why not let's give it a try. I read 3 books, couldn't finish House of Chains. Began to look at the spoilers after that.

While I liked that he moved outside the regular elf dwarf shit it was not jaw opening. The so called "anthropologist" only has a b.a. in it, so there's that. I think Elder Scrolls did the same job far better, while mostly using the elf-dwarf-orc tropes, but making them more unique. Still I think the races and their history is one of the few "okay" things in the series.

I will not go into his writing style, even mr anthropologist b.a. himself recognizes the first book is a bit harsh on the edges.

But the story, fucking hell its basically a roleplaying game. You can feel it, "group meeting at tavern" "becoming king/emperor" there is even an instance in the book where it is so obivious that they killed an important npc crated by dm and erickson just incorporated it in his book. Dragonlance, the fucking kender infested dragonlance had its origins from the same named ad&d module with the same story, but at least weiss and hickman managed to move out of that in the second and third book. With erickson it is still with you, at least It was still with me in the 4th book and I highly doubt it gets better. I'll not even talk about how sometimes it felt like a Glen Cook fanfic.

Malazan is basically some weird but good unique ideas about race/society + black company + rpg game.

I also had read Glen Cook's Black Company before and the influence is obvious.

Again I do like some aspects of Erickson, I wish more writers wrote in Malazan world. Simialr to Ed Greenwood who I believe is a far more shitty writer than Erickson, but FR at least had Paul S Kemp.

Ah hello friend, right you're literally me so I can answer this question.

FUtD basically is split between two narratives, one of these wolf-like aliens (I won't spoil but needless to say it's fantastically creative) and some human adventures. The human chapters suck ASS and fucking drag the rest of the book down. The alien chapters are phenomenal and balance the entire thing out nicely. For that reason alone I say read it.

This answer also applies to related which suffers from literally the same problem, but with spiders instead of wolves.
