Most people find challenge elsewhere in their lives and turn to hobbies for relaxation. Some people lead sedentary lives and enjoy being engaged by their hobbies. Etc etc.

There are two motivations for attacking others. One, for personal gain. Two, to distract from yourself. Maybe you often feel scrutinized in real life and it became a habit, but here you're anonymous. We don't know you and therefore can't hurt you anymore than you can hurt us. You don't have to be this way unless you want to be.

Okay so I'm about two thirds to three quarters of the way through the Vorkosigan series and I think this is easily some of the best space opera written by a contemporary author. This is trash. I'm not saying this to be edgy, or contrarian, or to shit on something popular. This is undoubtedly the worst fantasy book I've ever read.
Somewhere in there is a somewhat neat, vague idea in regards to worldbuilding, but everything from dialogue, prose in general, plotting, pacing, and characterization is just atrocious.
The characterization especially, it's the most two-dimensional, stereotypical and trope-y shit I've read in a long time.

And no, it's got nothing in common with Firefly apart from featuring a crew doing semi-legal shit with their ship. That's it.

When I first read LotR after seeing the movies I thought it was the most boring thing and figured I'd never touch it again. I couldn't even get through 20p of The Silmarillion. After that I discovered ASoIaF and a bunch of other series, and figured LotR to be creative but objectively the worst written of them all. I remember skipping as a kid all the "boringer parts" describing nature and was annoyed I couldn't understand what the fuck all those geographical landmarks meant. Horrid writing, I thought.
Now that I'm nearly two decades older, I can't read anything that isn't Tolkien and truly enjoy it. I regularly parse through The LotR and The Silmarillion and I'm always struck by the sheer beauty of the language.
Nowadays whenever I pick up one of these random fantasy series told in third person limited by an author that clearly has no passion for growing things, I just lose all interest. It's in every way a contemporary story except the characters are pretending to be in a fantasy video game.
I'm always amazed when Bakker says PoN was half inspiration from Tolkien and half from Herbert because, while I do think he has some of best prose you can find in fantasy, he has no subtlety in terms of characterization and no real passion for natural aspects of world-building. Not sure why I inserted this rant, but yeah.

A bit disappointed. Not enough Magic Law, which is the main reason I even picked up the book. It also seemed like the author took the "do NOT dump exposition" advice a bit too much too heart, which is why interesting things get mentioned but never developed. Yeah and he apparently today he announced that he was going to break his writing hiatus by writing some filler D&D crossover with Rick and Morty (had to check it wasn't an April Fools joke). Apparently not. Rothfuss really is writing what is the most hilarious middle finger ever.

And not even a fucking book, but a fucking comic.

DoS is clearly going to get delayed for the rest of eternity and return right in time for Kvothe 'I Fucked a Sex Goddess For 99% Of The Book As Filler'.

Don't waste your time with the second book. WMF has a shit reputation for a reason. Name kind of strings you along with the promise it might get good, but WMF has zero plot and zero pacing.

The only thing that can redeem this series is a return to the Chandrian mystery and it's not going to happen.

kindles are usually shit and unless you install custom rom youll be locked into the amazon store or something like that.
if you want a good e-reader you gotta splurge upwards of 400 bucks for a good e-ink reader.
or you know just use your phone. that works too or any tablet really. or a notebook.
moonreader+ and readera are good ebook readers since they support pretty much all formats from pdf and epub to azw.
mobilism.org is a good place for ebooks or undernet/irchighways #ebooks channel.

pro tip. if your tablet has an amoled screen or any oled screen. set up your e-reader to have black background and white text instead the other way around. with amoled screens black pixels arent actually turned on saving you immense amounts of battery. it affects oled screens to some degree too. since they do some light clustering for pixels that makes it so only so many pixels in a group of black pixels are actually on to provide light.

Yes they were. Especially the training arc that literally do not advance the plot in any way. We don't yet know if there's any point in showing the readers Faerie, or if it's just pointless worldbuilding, but the whole sex godess arc is stupid as fuck.

Late to the thread today...but I see this as an expression of "As Above, So Below". Severian is expounding upon the notion that the Greater Glories of the Mysteries of the Heavens get sort of "played out" in human dramas on Earth. Also, there's the reciprocal notion that the small gets magnified to enlarge and enrich the perceptions of the mind. It reminds me of the Lotus flower, whose seed contains a miniature image of the full grown flower within.
I thought I'd be able to nail those thoughts down better, but oh well.
