heya /lit/,

i come searching for a good retelling of asian history, specifically i'm interested in the the formation of both japan and north korea although i wouldn't mind books about china either. are there any good ones out there? textbook recommendations are also fine, although i'd prefer something written in more of a standard book format. i don't mind picking up multiple books!

oh, something i forgot to put in the OP: part of why i'm interested in the topic is because i wish to understand the animosity between these asian countries and how it got to be that way, and the attitudes that have shaped the countries and how they developed over time

Read the diary of Ernest Mason Satow for information on the leadup to the Meiji restoration. As an aside, the moment the Meiji restoration occurred all the great military commanders of the Boshin War got together and tried to figure out which nearby country to colonise. They saw it as a matter of course.

I can't give a recommendation for the NE asia, but can give for SEA.

Vietnam: Rising dragon by bill hayton
The Soith China Sea: The Struggle for power by the same guy (read the first two chapters that focus on prehistory and explain how the colonisation started and progressed. The other chapters revolve around the current dispute in the SCS. The one about ASEAN conferences is kinda funny).

Philippines: read Noli Me Tangere by Jose Rizal (crucial for understanding their society)

I can tell you.
ww2, japs being subhumans to the whole of asia
general competitiveness especially in the modern day
proxy war splitting korea in two, on-going social and cultural proxy war after military conflict ended (USSR is gone, North is its own thing, South is essentially an American colony).
