No, why would they? It's written in Modern Hebrew. The shit American Jews can "read" is biblical Hebrew, which has a number of differences (tense/aspect being the main one).

But you're right, most kids in Hebrew school are learning to recite shit phonetically by rote, with minimal understanding of what they're actually reading. I've been doing Biblical Hebrew for like four years now at the college level, and I still can't read a lot of shit without the diacritics. Modern Hebrew has too much vocabulary I know nothing about, also.

Is it worth learning Hebrew? Is there anything interesting to read in it besides biblical shit? Currently reading The Story of the Jews by Simon Schama, interesting book though somewhat hard to follow for a history book. Most of the history is told from personal perspectives or anecdotes but I'm not entirely sure he's out to prove a point or give the reader a firm chronological knowledge of Jewish history, just to give an interesting anecdotal history of the Jews

Yeah I've actually just resolved to give up on it. Just for context I am not Jewish myself. After he discusses the end of the Second Temple and starts discussing the development of the Mishnah and synagogues, I found myself reading entire pages and having no idea what he was talking about. A lot of it seems to presuppose knowledge of Jewish practice and general history, with the point being for him to provide anecdotal counters to a lot of the "assumptions" made, but I lack that knowledge to begin with so it's hard to read.
