Am I actually retarded? It takes me 3 minutes per page and My eyes just gloss over some of phrases without any imagery.

Serious, Should I read his other work first?
I always thought I was smart, but this is humbling.

I can follow the story well enough, but names are but disfigurable faces ina mess of crowd.
Actions and emotions convey well enough, setting and time are easy to. But I don't see the relations between tho whos.

hmm does the three minutes include the time where you time yourself and are aware you are timing yourself because you have some weird complex where you think reading speed matters and therefore don't enjoy anything you're actually reading? What, ya think ya gonna hoover up this nonsense and be able to sort it out instantaneously like the brain bug from starship troopers? this book demands a ton from you, not something to flip through while waiting in the reception room. I shouldn't have to tell someone who thinks they are smart this, but you should read because you want to, not out of some weird obligation

No, people who treat it as a serious work are retarded. Its the intimate, esoteric ravings of a fragile schizophrenic mind. Reading it is almost like a form of voyeurism for pseudointellectuals. There is no reason anyone ought to be able to make sense of the book. Yes, its possible, but its also possible to make sense of the crayoned hieroglyphs in a rubber room at your average psych ward. That also isn't an intellectual pursuit.

It's OK, you can admit it: you're too dumb for Finnegans Wake. There's no shame in it. After all, the book has defeated considerably brighter readers than you.

guidance is highly advised, the book has an ungodly amount of references, wordplay, symbols and easter eggs that no sane man can find on his own, no matter how intelligent

is it possible to read it when english isn't your first language?
i know it's more than just english, but it seems to be principally grounded in it, from a linguistic standpoint.
Do you think it could even be enjoyable?

Finnegans Wake is basically a sequel to Ulysses, which itself is a sequel to Dubliners and Portrait of the Artist.

If you're going to read Joyce, for God's sake, read the books in order. You're setting yourself up for failure otherwise.

Each of Joyce's works is an aptitude test for the next. If you haven't mastered Ulysses you're wasting your fucking time on the Wake.

Joyce is probably one of the only few authors really worth reading chronologically, the increase in compelxity from book to book is stark and they're all masterpieces.

Considering most words are completely new to the average reader, three minutes is not a slow pace for this book. You might want to slow down even, to appreciate its richness. Reading it out loud also helps. Listen to the voice recording on YouTube of Joyce reading the end of the Anna Livia chapter. That should give you an idea of how full of flavor the text is. Reading it out loud after a few drinks is tremendously fun. Good luck and keep trying!

Also, Joyces books get deeper with each read, and proceeding with an idea of rereading whichever book you’re on one day is helpful. It’s impossible to crack it all in one read, so don’t be a fag
