I end been reading up on post-modernism lately and this is a perspective I've recently been exposed to that seems to be shared by a large (or at least significant) part of the population.

Still don't know if I agree, but I can definitely see where DFW and others are coming from.

I do back the whole New Sincerity thing though. Personally kind of sick or irony and cynicism. I think the fallout of postmodernism is making people realize how fucked up it is and that realization is re-invigorating people's desires for value and belief.

i have no deep philosophical insights about DFW or the condition of post-modernism, but did anyone else who read his work somewhat agree with his feelings/assertions about society but remain unimpressed? i've read him and come away none the wiser every time.

We can only progress past postmodernism by building new movements on top of it. Trying to revert to an earlier standard would result in a postmodern pastiche of that standard and trying to deconstruct/critique it would result in something that's exponentially more postmodern.
