just finished rendezvous with rama. there were a lot of mentions of polygamy with almost no impact of the plot. was this just a magical realm or does it have some importance in the later books?

no, it does not. the first book was not written with a view to any sequels. god alone knows what kind of blackmail Gentry Lee used on Clarke to get permission to spew those fetid abortions. i consider them to be similar to the Dune prequels; cash-grab trash.

It ends with, "ramids do everything in threes" so its hard for me to believe there weren't plans for sequels from the get go. I still agree with you that Lee is a hack, though.
