do you guys like Ovid? I like Ovid. These are basically short stories written poetically. I favor AD Melville's translation in the Oxford World Classics edition. its a good translation and it comes with notes, plus its easy to find used online.

Ovid's great. Though I'd advise people to start with the Love Poems (Amores, Ars Amatoria, Remedia) because you could easily go through the Metamorphoses without realizing what a cheeky fucker he's being at all times, and in the Love Poems it's a bit more obvious.

Also William S. Anderson has fantastic notes for the first 10 books (went senile before finishing it).

I read Mendelbaum's translation recently. Pretty fire bars throughout. Honestly some of it was very disturbing or just straight up heart breaking but I guess thats how some great literature be.

Boccaccio is a thousand times more entertaining, but his stories don't carry the same referential clout

The Decameron would never have happened without Ovid you nigger. And if you don't think Ovid's funny you aren't paying attention to him.

Metamorphoses is solid overall and has some great moments, but frankly I found the Amores and especially the Heroides way more interesting. I think if you're already familiar with most classical mythology, you'll feel that way, too.
