Here's a translation I found with a fast google search.

I live without living in myself,
And in such a way, I hope,
I die because I do not die.

Since I die of love,
Living apart from love,
I live now in the Lord,
Who has desired me for Himself.
He inscribed on my heart
When I gave it to Him:
I die because I do not die…

Ah, how bitter a life
When the Lord is not enjoyed!
While love is sweet,
Long awaiting is not.
O God, take away this burden
Heavier than steel,
I die because I do not die.

Only with that surety
I will die, do I live,
Because in dying
My hope in living is assured.
Death, bringing life,
Do not tarry; I await you,
I die because I do not die.

See how love is strong (Songs 8:6).
Life, do not trouble me.
See how all that remains
Is in losing you to gain.
Come now, sweet death,
Come, dying, swiftly.
I die because I do not die.

That life from above,
That is true life,
Until this life dies,
Life is not enjoyed.
Death, be not aloof;
in dying first, may life be,
I die because I do not die.

Life, what can I give
To my God living in me,
If not to lose you,
Thus to merit him?
In dying I want to reach
Him alone whom I seek:
I die because I do not die.

It presents the fictional story of the girl who supposedly inspired the homonymous painting. It's historical so you will find nice descriptions of the everyday life of the period but also about how Vermeer worked on his paintings and how he lived (because basically this girl was hired as a maid at his house).
When I saw the painting you posted I recognized it right away as a Vermeer because it's exactly the kind of painting that is described in the book.
Anyway, you can decide for yourself if it's worth reading after all this babbling, but anyway it's a short novel (260 pages) so why not?

Orphan girl is miserable in the orphanage, so she moves in with this grandpa (might be her uncle or just an old guy) who is famous for being a cantankerous asshole that hates everyone. She helps him out and makes friends with this little rich crippled girl and a shepherd boy that helps the grandpa out and goes on adventures.

>>10845745
Yeah, Heidi is a really famous property. More so than pippi longstocking, I'd wager. It's been adapted to hell and back.I don't know about the states, but in europe they're STILL running the old 60s cartoon at least, they were when I still watched tv. The original was written by Johanna Spyri. and they had long second titles like books of the time did, but they almost always get dropped.

I actually feel stupid for not immediately thinking of heidi when I saw the image.

These are the epochs I'd focus on first, based on their impact on art in general, and then branch out from there.

Sadly, not really. What I learned was mostly in school.and most of the books I still have are fashion design. But there's a lot of them out there, and there's a lot of houses to choose from depending on how deep you want to go. Taschen 25 jubiläum series is the one I usually go for, because they're cheap, thick and there's a million of them. But uhhh, I think they're probably german, but with art books that's usually up in the air.

I'd just search amazon and read some reviews. The good ones tend to stand out somewhat.
